Previously in Ultimate X-Men: Maystorm takes the reins! No more hiding their powers… even if it means hiding their faces! Disenfranchised and despairing after the raid on the Children of the Atom, the man-made mutants seek out leadership…

And Maystorm is ready to rise to the occasion!

WHO ARE THE CHILDREN OF THE ATOM?

As Ultimate X-Me #11 opens, Nico Minoru and her friend Mori are investigating the disappearance of her friend Natsu, a mutant who can shoot optic blasts… and accidentally killed her mother with them. They find almost no clues in Natsu’s home, save for some broken bits of stone placed in the shape of an X. Elsewhere, Hisako returns home after hanging out with her friend Maystorm, only to find the mysterious Psylocke waiting for her. They spar and argue (spargue?) about Hisako’s inaction in the face of mutant rejection, while Maystorm sets off to a meeting of masked minds. Her mysterious friends name her as their leader, and she worries at first that she’s not up to the task. And then, the mysterious Shadow King arrives, with the Children of the Atom in tow, spoiling for a fight.

Of course, they don’t count on Maystorm’s response: She isn’t ready to fight them, she’s ready to help them.

    ALMOST INDESCRIBABLE

The best part of the new Ultimate universe is in the creators’ willingness to do things differently, and nowhere is that more obvious than in Ultimate X-Men #11. Momoko’s art in this series is unlike any Western comic on the stands, combining a manga aesthetic with cartoon-like character designs and a watercolor aesthetic. I can’t tell if it’s actually painted or digitally modified, but the effect is really lovely, emphasizing the cultural differences between Hi No Kuni and the rest of the world. My only real complaint about the issue’s story is that it feels too short, something that has happened with each issue of this book. Some narratives just read better in larger portions, which is how I read the best of the classic Vertigo books, and how I’m likely going to be re-reading this series in the future.

BOTTOM LINE: A FINE COMIC EXPERIENCE

If you expect Ultimate X-Men #11 to feel or look like the X-Men titles you grew up with, you might be disappointed, but if you’re willing to engage with the material and enjoy a new take on the mutant heroes, you’ll find plenty to like in these pages, which round out to 4.5 out of 5 stars overall. The only real question I have is, how long can Peach Momoko keep giving us this kind of quality month after month?

And the only real answer is “a lot longer, I hope.”

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.
