Previously in Amazing Spider-Man: Spider-Man finds himself face-to-face with Cyrios, Scion of Cytorrak! Representing the inevitability of time, Cyrios takes Spider-Man on a heartbreaking tour through Peter Parker’s past AND future in excruciating detail.
How many deaths will Spider-Man spend trying to alter his past and save his future?!
THE INEVITABILITY OF TIME
Amazing Spider-Man #63 begins some years ago, as Ben Parker helps to teach his nephew Peter how to ride a bike. Also, in Forest Hills circa fifteen years ago, Cyrios, one of the scions of Cytorrak, immediately shuttles into the present and the life of Peter Parker. Fortunately for Spidey, Cyrios also freezes time, which keeps his secret identity from becoming known to all his friends and his new lady-friend, Shay. Cyrios once again takes him back in time, to the night of Ben’s murder, and even though he knows that he can’t stop the tragedy, Peter still races to his home just in time… to witness it. The same is true of the night Gwen Stacy died, the night he rejected Venom and destroyed the life of Eddie Brock, the murder of Jeanne DeWolff, and Kraven’s suicide. Despite his repeated failures, Spidey refuses to give up, and Cyrios is happy to continually torment him with his failings, taking him to the night he refused to stop the burglar who would eventually kill Uncle Ben.
And that’s when the other shoe drops…
DEATH NUMBER THREE
This issue has a few really exceptional moments, including a Bill & Ted moment that’s both funny and dramatic, a well-written conversation with Black Cat about their friendship, and an ominous moment at X-Men headquarters that probably means a certain Mister Marko is on his way. However, the best part of this issue is seeing Peter Parker face his own worst moments yet refusing to back down. Melnikov’s art is also good, evoking both Romitas, Bagley, Zeck, and more, but having its own identity, with my only real complaint being the question of why The Inevitability of Time would wear fishnets and a garter belt. Despite this story being about “death,” it gives readers a lively and active Spider-Man who overcomes adversity and time travel with his brains, as well as his fists.
BOTTOM LINE: SOME PRETTY ART
In the final analysis, Amazing Spider-Man #63 was a fine issue, with some really interesting art and a nice premise carrying it through, allowing even those who aren’t sure about a mystically-powered Spidey to find the old-school heart of the hero, earning 4 out of 5 stars overall. With five deaths yet to go, this arc is shaping up to be a lot of fun, though I wonder if we’re going to see Peter facing down with Sorcerer Supreme Doom.

After a looong period of Spidey being a ping-pong ball, it's nice to see a clever, thoughtful, and proactive hero in action. Melnikov's art and the new costume are really attactive as well.
