Amazon Studios The Rings of Power is here. The Second season is on its way. We want all Spoilerites to have the best viewing experience possible and have the widest knowledge base about the Second Age of Middle-Earth. This is a weekly Let’s Get Nerdy article series highlighting a different piece of Tolkien I think you need to know about!
This post contains potential spoilers for The Rings of Power’s second season. At the time of writing these are simply rumours, but if you may want to avoid spoilers come back later and see if I was right!
In past articles I have answered the question:
Fans of The Rings of Power have – and should be – rejoicing with last week’s news broken exclusively by The Hollywood Reporter about the future of The Rings of Power at Amazon Studios.
TL;DR
Patrick McKay and JD Payne ink new three-year overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios as they prep a potential third season.
Knowing no more details than the additional strapline a trust is evoked between Amazon Studios and the McKay/Payne team. A reupping of the contract belies continuing whatever work they were already contracted to begin/complete and the holding open of the door for potential new projects in future.
I know we are all sitting around waiting for The Rings of Power season 2 and coupling that with the contract I feel confident assuming a thor season is brewing.
Further details from THR include:
- Patrick McKay and JD Payne have signed a three-year deal which also launches their own production company, 10:40 PM Productions.
- The show stands as Amazon’s most-watched original series and ranked in Nielsen’s streaming chart Top 4 every week during its initial run.
ANNNNNNNNNDDDDDDDDDD we got a little note about when to expect the long-awaited debut of the second season of The Rings of Power:
The show’s second season has wrapped filming and will be released later this year.
With the looming IATSE strike threatening to shut down all film productions in the United States we can at least look forward to a Fall/Winter slate including more Middle-Earth!
Last week fans of fantasy television delighted to learn we would be getting the second season of the Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon would air on Max this June 16th (read more about the details on last week’s installment of Did You Hear?), and while there was genuine excitement all around many Tolkien fans have been left wondering when we are ever going to get a:
- Release date
- Announcement
- Poster
- Promo art
- Trailer
Fans have taken to social media over the past couple days to express disappointment at the lack of info:

Although I do want to encourage Spoilerites to remember we have San Diego Comic-Con coming up in a few short months and ahead of the first season Amazon Studios had a very heavy Rings of Power presence there. That’s what my bets are on!
