We want all Spoilerites to have the best viewing experience possible and have the widest knowledge base about the Second Age of Middle-Earth. This is a weekly Let’s Get Nerdy article series highlighting a different piece of Tolkien I think you need to know about!
Happy Two Days After Christmas, Spoilerites!
The only reason I’m specifically referencing Christmas rather than the Yuletide Winter Festivities is because, per J.R.R. Tolkien’s book canon, the Christmas holiday does exist in Middle-Earth and I’m a geek who likes to be canon-compliant.
Since we’ve officially entered the wasteland between the end of the holiday festivities and New Year’s Eve. If you’re visiting with friends or family you may be coming right up against a sense of desperation about how to entertain yourself, particularly if it is too cold outside to do much of anything.
Last year I filmed a TikTok called Lord of the Rings is a Christmas Movie. Yes, this is a thinly-veiled plug of my TikTok (please follow me on TikTok!), but it’s also a good video wherein I make some excellent points:

I also want to acknowledge that you may be a person who reads these features, but has perhaps never watched The Lord of the Rings film trilogy or The Hobbit trilogy. Why not give yourself the gift of 12+ hours of entertainment? If you like the people you are spending time with the family-friendly movies will engender a feeling of fellowship and adventure. If you don’t like the people you are spending time with perhaps as much The Lord of the Rings alone will take up half a day of your time!
They’re also the fastest, best primer you could have for The Rings of Power and The War of the Rohirrim which are (at the time I’m writing this), poised to release in the new year!
