Will Gil-Galad Lead an Army in The Rings of Power Season 2? – Let’s Get Nerdy!

Ashley Victoria RobinsonBy Ashley Victoria RobinsonMarch 15, 20234 Mins Read

Amazon Studios The Rings of Power is here. We want all Spoilerites to have the best viewing experience possible and have the widest knowledge base about the Second Age of Middle-Earth. This is a weekly Let’s Get Nerdy article series highlighting a different piece of Tolkien I think you need to know about!

Book readers are probably already screaming at the title of this week’s feature. I’ve written extensively throughout Did You Hear? about High King Gil-Galad and the powerful leadership role he holds in J.R.R. Tolkien’s original canon. Gil-Galad was easily my most anticipated character to appear in The Rings of Power. AND I happen to think Benjamin Walker is a fantastic casting choice. However, knowing what he gets up to in the first season of The Rings of Power the High King of the Elves feels like a far cry from the future leader of The Last Alliance of Men and Elves.

However HOWEVER, last November the above mentioned Benjamin Walker gave an interview to Nerdist about what is in store next season for his Gil-Galad:

LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER – BENJAMIN WALKER LIVE INTERVIEW

Dan Casey sits down with Benjamin Walker (Gil-Galad) to talk about his time and experiences on the first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

The word I want you to pay attention to is:

    Aeglos

Aeglos, like Narsil, like Sting, is a legendary weapon created by J.R.R. Tolkien. What’s extra cool about Aeglos is that it’s not the typical type of magic weapon – a sword. Given J.R.R. Tolkien’s affinity for Arthurian Legend the Excalibur comparisons beg to be made. What I find particularly cool about Aeglos is that it is a spear.

The word Aeglos is a Sindarin Elvish name meaning “snow point” or “icicle”.

Gil-Galad (Benjamine Walker), with Aeglos in The Rings of Power

In fact, Aeglos is so prominent throughout Gil-Galad’s tenure as High King it became the thing of legend amongst his enemies and was considered feared. In fact, when Gil-Galad falls in battle against Sauron Aeglos falls at his side.

Thereby it follows, if Benjamin Walker (who plays Gil-Galad), name drops Aeglos there’s a very high chance we (the Spoilerites watching at home), will see Aeglos during the second season of The Rings of Power. I don’t necessarily believe The Last Alliance of Men and Elves is going to appear in The Rings of Power season 2 (that feels quite premature to me), but I do think there’s a decent chance we will see Gil-Galad lift Aeglos in defence of Eregion – Sauron’s next likely target, if you ask me!

The defence of Eregion saw a precursor to The Last Alliance of Men and Elves when Khazad-dûm sent forth dwarven warriors to stand alongside their elvish neighbours to protect Eregion from Sauron’s gathering dark.

The truism is “a picture’s worth a thousand words”, but in this case: a word is worth a thousand words and that word is Aeglos.
