In a post-SAG-AFTRA strike world I can not only write about The Rings of Power, but freely about all upcoming adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. In the spirit of diving back into what I haven’t been able to explore with you this week we’re going to catch up on everything we know about The Rings of Power season 2.
When the WGA went on strike Amazon Studios made the controversial decision to keep the second season of The Rings of Power in active production. In fairness, HBO made the same decision about House of the Dragon. I highlight both of these decisions because particularly with fantasy and science fiction deeply genre shows (I’d even include Apple TV+’s For All Mankind in this genre), not having a writer present on set to explain lore or rewrite a highly stylized line which seemed powerful on the page, but isn’t working in performance is placing the monetary value of art over the quality.
The season shot across the world, as with season one with Surrey, Berkshire, and the Canary Islands being key locations for Amazon Studio’s version of Middle-Earth. Production wrapped in June 2023, just a couple short weeks before the SAG-AFTRA strike went into effect on July 14, 2023.
Barring a possible IATSE strike in early 2024 (yes, the rumblings have already begun), fans are hoping for a release in summer 2024. I’d put my money closer to an autumn/winter, but the announcement seems poised to come between Emerald City Comic Con and San Diego Comic-Con on the horizon for next year.
Since the last casting speculation I shared with you there’s been very little revealed on that front except a few fun piece of conjecture from Redanian Intelligence, beginning with this Tweet:
Yasen Atour (Coën in The Witcher) plays a character codenamed “Hurst” in #TheRingsOfPower Season 2 pic.twitter.com/eAc8h1srZv
— Redanian Intelligence (@RedanianIntel) April 18, 2023
Any fans of The Witcher reading this will probably be familiar with Redanian Intelligence. According to Redanian Intelligence, Atlanta actor Celesta Dodwell has joined The Rings of Power for season 2 and now only that – BUT – Nia Towle’s character is set to play a key part in Isildur’s story throughout the new season.
TBH, they make a compelling case with the photo they got their hands on below:
Maxim Baldry, the actor who plays Isildur, spoke with Variety earlier this year and while he didn’t mention anyone new coming into Isildur’s life, did allude to more battles in our future:
“There’s a lot more action.”
As for plot? We’ve had even less than we’ve had recently on the casting front. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter Co-Showrunner JD Payne stated:
“Season two has a canonical story. There may well be viewers who are like, ‘This is the story we were hoping to get in season one!’ In season two, we’re giving it to them”.
On the official Rings of Power podcast he stated:
“[In] season 2 there is a lot more canon that we are interested in adapting and bringing to life”.
Amazon Studios co-head Vernon Sanders did tease more conflict coming to The Rings of Power when he spoke to Deadline:
“You will see bigger battles in season two including some iconic moments from the appendices and the books”
Are you excited yet?
