    UNCANNY SPIDER-MAN #2

    Writer: Si Spurrier
    Artist: Lee Garbett
    Colorist: Matt Milla
    Letterer: Joe Caramagna
    Editor: Sarah Brunstad
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
    Release Date: October 25th, 2023

Previously in Uncanny Spider-Man: Kurt Wagner, a teleporter and former member of the X-Men, helped found the island nation of Krakoa. Nightcrawler was absent during the Orchis attack at the Hellfire Gala, unaware of the events. Now masquerading as a teleporting Spider-Man to evade Orchis’ detection and clear his name, he is hunted by hired mercenaries Vulture and Silver Sable and unexpectedly encounters his birth mother, Mystique!

    A NEW KIND OF PROFESSIONALISM

Uncanny Spider-Man #2 begins with Mystique in a state of confusion, experiencing a mental break and fleeing. Meanwhile, Nightcrawler, posing as Spider-Man, is attacked by Rhino, who is under mind control. Silver Sable’s mercenary, observing the situation, seems at odds with Orchis due to a lack of information and transparency. In the ensuing conflict, Rhino traps Nightcrawler in a field from which he cannot teleport. Sable intervenes and unmasks Spider-Man, leading to a chaotic confrontation. Nightcrawler saves Sable when Rhino charges Nightcrawler by teleporting them into the subway below instead of outside the field. This rescue is followed by an unexpected moment of flirtation and a kiss.

As Rhino spirals out of control, Nightcrawler stops him by teleporting him high into the air and watching him fall before ensuring his escape.

    UNCERTAINTY AND REFLECTION

My admiration for Nightcrawler has been consistent, but Silver Sable is a character I haven’t explored much. In Uncanny Spider-Man #2, a romantic subplot unfolds, feeling somewhat out of place amidst the current storyline. The creative team attempts to mirror Spider-Man’s behavior through Kurt’s dialogue and actions. Spider-Man has a history of occasional romantic involvements with adversaries; from that perspective, the story aligns better. The banter gains context, turning the comic from confusing to thought-provoking. The action is dynamic, the flirtation intriguing, and the narrative advances elements of the ongoing Fall of X storyline. Blending art and writing effectively, this comic is compelling for those in the right frame of mind.

    OVERALL IMPRESSION: SATISFYING

Upon my initial reading of Uncanny Spider-Man #2, I had reservations. However, after delving into the narrative and understanding its direction, I greatly appreciate it. Both Spider-Man and Nightcrawler are among my favorite Marvel characters, making this interpretation engaging. With that perspective, I rate this comic a solid 4 out of 5 stars and eagerly anticipate the next installment.
