Previously in Eve: After saving the world, Eve and her sister set their sights on uniting the world’s children and rebuilding. One particular base never responded, and they decided to visit. Eve finds a cold, calculating Selene, who immediately has a problem with Wexler and tries to kill him. To cause more hostilities, Selene order’s the children to stab Eve’s sister, and she is only saved by a weird nanobot entity.
Eve: Children of the Moon #5 shows the aftermath of Eve’s sister’s attempted murder. Eve and the nanobots do not turn their wraith onto Selene despite everything. Instead, the love of sisters seems to prevail. Selene sends her men out to find and kill Wrexler, with Eve and the nanobots following. Selene succeeds in stabbing the robotic teddy bear, and she worries about the monster she is becoming. Selene is comforted by one of her friends, who was turned into a nanobot creature. Eve’s sister decides to join the nanobots and leave Eve to lead the world alone, perhaps finally finding her own identity. Eve walks alone but realizes that Wexler is still alive.
Eve: Children of the Moon #5 felt like they tried to close many plot points rather than weigh into the emotional impact of some of the scenes. We have a couple of missed opportunities to slow down the pacing for emphasis. For example, there is a beautiful page where Eve is hugging her sister, and she almost fades away due to her nano nature. But we immediately leave the scene to show Eve’s sister pulling out the knife. Moments like this imply that we are pushing forward to finish the plot, likely due to trying to keep it under a page count. The story concept is impressive, but we needed another issue over the miniseries to hit the emotional impact well.
I really enjoyed the Eve title. Despite my gripes about Eve: Children of the Moon #5, I enjoyed the story and want to see Eve become a better leader. For me, Selene represents the leader Eve could become, and watching her develop to be a better person will be engaging. Eve: Children of the Moon #5 is a 3.5 out of 5 stars overall.

Eve: Children of the Moon #5 is an excellent premise that falls short in its pacing due to too many ideas for its page count.
