WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
Eight Billion Genies #1 starts at the Lampwick Bar and Grill and introduces many characters. Mr. Williams is the bartender and owner. Robbie is a 12-year-old kid at the bar to pick up his pass-out dad. There is a band setting up with Daisy, Brian, and Alex. And a couple of non-English speaking tourists who arrived here by mistake. Alex takes Daisy outside to ask her out when suddenly, every person receives a Genie and a wish. Mr. Williams immediately wishes that his bar and everything in the bar are unaffected by the wishes. Soon after, Daisy wishes to have Brian, the other band member, fall in love with her. Unfortunately, this doesn’t work because Brian was in the bar when Mr. Williams said his wish.
As everyone tries to figure out what is going on, we get several spread pages looking at what people wished for. But the world is chaos, and people are dying due to unrestricted wishes. Only the bar is safe from the chaos.
HOW DID HE KNOW?
The premise of Eight Billion Genies #1 is fascinating. What a great idea and exciting concept to grow and expand. The book’s introduction does a great job introducing each and every character and establishing personality traits. Mr. Williams seems to be an intelligent guy who was somehow prepared for this situation. The band is filled with young adults who are still a little impulsive. Because of the setup, when the genies appear, I can focus entirely on that. I think many writing techniques suggest that we introduce our literature with action sequences and worry about introducing characters later. In this case, I’m glad that I learned all the leading players before the main plot point showed up. Great choices here by the creative team.
The story also has great art. Due to the nature of the wishes, I wonder if Ryan Browne got to go crazy and draw whatever they wanted. There are rockets, castles, and robots all over the page to show how bizarre some of the wishes are. And it really shines a line on the theme of impulses and consequences that I think will be a significant part of the story.
BOTTOM LINE: GREAT START
I don’t have any real complaints about the book. It is a solid start to an excellent concept. Eight Billion Genies #1 is a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars, and I am looking forward to seeing what happens next.
