Times are tough and comics can be expensive! We here at Major Spoilers understand that and we know that many people are trade waiters. We want to help you make the most informed buying decision concerning collected editions.
December is Holiday season time and that also means that collected editions are great choices to give as gift for any Winter Occasion! With that in mind, we were asked to present choices that can be enjoyed by the whole family! This is what we all had to say:
MATTHEW’S PICK
Batman the Jiro Kuwata Batmanga vol. 1
Writer: Jiro Kuwata
Artist: Jiro Kuwata
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $14.99
In Stores: December 3rd, 2014
ORDER ON AMAZON
“This December is the month where I turn 44, and I’m finally glad to be old enough to say this: “You rotten kids don’t know how good you have it today!” When I was first getting into comics, we only heard rumors of the cool comics of other countries, like Katushiro Otomo’s ‘Akira’ or Alan Moore’s ‘Marvelman’. During the big post-Dark Knight boom, rumors of a series of Japanese 1960s Batman stories came to my attention for the first time, and the idea of full-on Manga-style Batmania was irresistible to me. Sadly, it was some years before I finally got my hands on a (really awful, incomplete and hard-to-read) copy, and I’ve never been able to read the *whole* story… UNTIL NOW! If you’ve ever wondered what it would take for me to recommend a Bat-book, it’s the co-creator of 8-Man working without a net, with villains like The Human Ball and Lord Death-Man, completely ignoring American continuity. 15-year-old me has been looking forward to this for
quite some time (that rotten kid!)” – Matthew
GEORGE’S PICK
Transformers vs. G.I. Joe Volume 1
Writers: Tom Scioli and John Barber
Artist: Tom Scioli
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Price: $19.99
In Stores: December 30th, 2014
ORDER ON AMAZON
“Transformers vs. G.I. Joe is an absolutely crazy title with an unbounded energy that should appeal to the young and old alike. Tom Scioli’s retro-cartoony art and the “anything goes” writing create a vibe that resembles nothing so much as playing with all your favorite toys in the sandbox. Transformers vs. G.I. Joe is definitely an exercise in nostalgia, but it’s the rare nostalgia exercise that actually synthesizes its influences into something new and exciting. I’ve got all of these issues except for 0, and I’m still thinking about buying this trade.” – George
CHRIS’ PICK
Sex Criminals Vol. 2: Two Worlds One Cup
Writer: Matt Fraction
Artist: Chip Zdarksy
Publisher: Image Comics
Price: $14.99
In Stores: February 17th, 2015
ORDER ON AMAZON
“Sex Criminals Vol. 2: Two Worlds One Cop – While the title is certainly provocative, Sex Criminals rises above being explicit for explicit’s sake. It’s got humor, heart and characters that feel real. The story is fantastic and unlike anything I’ve read before. Mature readers should have this sitting under their tree this Christmas.” – Chris
WAYNE’S PICK
Ghosted vol. 3
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Davide Gianfelice

Price: $12.99
In Stores: December 10th, 2014
ORDER ON AMAZON
“There’ll be scary ghost stories.” Yup, that’s what you’ll find in the latest trade paperback of the Ghosted series, scripted by one of my very favorite comics writers, Joshua Williamson. He fools me just about every time, and I expect he’ll do the same to you as you delve into this book which is both frightening and engaging. Love it!” – Wayne
JASON’S PICK
Nightwing vol. 1: Bludhaven
Writer: Dennis O’Neil
Artist: Greg Land
Publisher: DC Comics

“Learn how to fly solo this Christmas as you read the solo title of the first boy wonder! This has all been published before but with this new collection, it’s my hope that DC will finally collect the entirety of this series! If you are Batman and Robin fan, you cannot go wrong reading this series.” – Jason

This collection has been lovingly restores – it’s beautiful, it’s classic comic book storytelling and it’s a great adventure story. Nelvana of the Northern Lights is a true piece of art that would be a wonderful gift this holiday season … plus, strong female protagonist!” – Ashley
