Amazon Studios The Rings of Power is here. The Second season is on its way. We want all Spoilerites to have the best viewing experience possible and have the widest knowledge base about the Second Age of Middle-Earth. This is a weekly Let’s Get Nerdy article series highlighting a different piece of Tolkien I think you need to know about!
This post contains potential spoilers for The Rings of Power’s second season. At the time of writing these are simply rumours, but if you may want to avoid spoilers come back later and see if I was right!
Recently Weta Worship and Private Division released another look at their upcoming highly anticipated cozy game, Tales of the Shire. The first place I saw the clip was @TeaWithTolkien on Twitter:
Tea with Tolkien on Twitter: “Another glimpse of the new Tales of the Shire game has been released! – it has been described as a heartwarming game about cosy Hobbit life- from Wētā + Private Division- set to release in 2024- for console and PC – trailer coming soon! pic.twitter.com/89HSvhavR0 / Twitter”

There isn’t much to be gleaned from the clip itself except ~*~vibes~*~ which for a cozy game in the style of Stardew Valley and the pandemic-must-have Animal Crossing, I don’t know if we really need anything more than ~*~vibes~*~.
Unlike the two games mentioned above Tales of the Shire does not appear to be released for a handheld gamer. At the time of this writing Tales of the Shire is slated for release on the following platforms: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC.
“Am I about to become a console gamer?” you may hear me asking myself …
According to commenters I’m not the only one maligning the lack of Nintendo Switch representation for Tales of the Shire:
Mojo Ferocious on Twitter: “No Switch!? / Twitter”
No Switch!?
Although there is still a lot of time for announcements to be made. Presently, Tales of the Shire has no official release date beyond “2024”. On the one hand, I find this to be an incredibly smart move because we live in a world where video game release dates are continuously pushed back with all the artists involved working crunch and suffering abuse conditions in order to get the content out in the hands of consumers. Who knows? We have many huge media conventions coming up in the next quarter: C2E2, San Diego Comic-Con, with New York Comic Con on the horizon for the latter half of the year. Lots of opportunities for a full trailer, big send up, and massive release date announcement!
On the other hand, Tales of the Shire was announced over six months ago at this point. To have a so-called “clip” which seems more like background art with a couple animated layers on top of it has understandably gotten some fans feeling frustrated with the lack of information. Why even let us know about Tales of the Shire last year if progress was going to trickle out to us so slowly?
This is the part of the article where I remind you if you are going to complain, but buy the game anyway that’s all that matters. I’m not advocating to not hold out for Tales of the Shire! Far from! I, for one, am in like Flynn, and will be playing as soon as I possibly can. Am I hoping for a most intricate clip soon? I surely am!
