Previously in Ms. Marvel: Kamala is dealing with the negative attention that comes with being an X-Man and a mutant. As she is in the crosshairs of Orchis, she finds that even her hometown is split on their opinions of her. On top of that, her powers are starting to malfunction, but at least she has a ticket to see the intergalactic rock star and mutant Lila Cheney!

FIGHT AGAINST THE VIEWS

Ms. Marvel: Mutant Menace #2 starts with some backstory on what happened to Liz Cheney. Liz did a concert on Mojoworld, and when she rejected Mojo’s shenanigans, all her loyal fans disappeared. She returned to Earth to ask for help but couldn’t find any X-Men except Kamala Khan. The two devise a plan to do a music video for Mojo, with Kamala taking on a new identity as Chord, a punk rocker!

Kamala struggles to keep her powers in check as she distracts Mojo by giving him millions of views on his streaming service. Despite that, she is still a hit with Mojo’s audience. This allows Liz to find her fans being used as view bots for Mojo. After fighting with Spiral, Liz cannot free her fans without hurting them. Kamala then sings one of Liz’s songs to inspire them and break the Li-natics out of their stupor! Even as Mojo hits Liz with Blightswill, she uses the last of her energy to teleport everyone to safety. When Ms. Marvel returns to Earth, she finds herself face-to-face with the Red Dagger!

FAST-PACED ONLINE LIFESTYLE

I admit that I am reading this title primarily to find out if they will reveal what Ms. Marvel’s new power is and if she will permanently join the X-Men after the Fall of X event. I got about six pages into Ms. Marvel: Mutant Menace. I skimmed the rest of the pages and realized this comic wasn’t for thirty-year-old me. I’m very familiar with the streaming space, but I’m not the target audience. So I called my six-year-old daughter over, and we read the comic together. She was disgusted by the character design of Mojo and thought Liz and Ms. Marvel’s punk rock design looked too old, but overall, she enjoyed the comic. Regardless, my experience with the comic significantly improved when I read it with my daughter, which shows that the story’s themes are simple enough to be understood by a child even though she has no context for the world and only basic knowledge of the character. For me, that is a win. As an adult, I don’t think you will find this comic super meaningful, but despite that, it is well-written and well-designed.

The character design is solid. I like Kamala in her X-Men outfit, and her identity as Chord looks excellent. Perhaps what takes the cake, though, is the backgrounds. Details like posters in Mojo World and the texture of buildings really stood out for me. Accented with random comments from viewers here and there, it provided a stimulating visual experience, from the linework to the colors and even the lettering. Great work by the creative team.

BOTTOM LINE: WORTH A READ

I liked the commentary on Ms. Marvel: Mutant Menace #2. It gives a glimpse into the fast-paced environment of the internet that relates to a younger audience while still giving an older reader something to grab onto. Ms. Marvel has always been a great character as she handles more identity crises than most other heroes in the Marvel Universe. 4 out of 5 stars for Ms. Marvel: Mutant Menace #2 by Marvel Comics.
