Game of Thrones surpassed the books this season. It also created a lot of frustration and anger in fans around the world.  Last night saw the season finale, which (if you believe your own Twitter feed) caused everyone to go nuts once again.

    Mother’s Mercy

Stannis marches. Dany is surrounded by strangers. Cersei seeks forgiveness. Jon is challenged.

This season was pretty uneven, but it had some really strong episodes, particularly ‘Hardhome’ which might be one of the best episodes of any season. The books that season 5 were based on suffered from some of this season’s problems in that they too spent a lot of time moving pieces around the board to get them where they needed to be. A lot of story was dropped outright, other plots were altered and merged, but all in all, if the plan is to wrap this up in two more seasons, it had to happen.

Everything now seems like it should build toward the climax. The White Walker threat is firmly established, Daenerys is getting back in touch with her Mother of Dragons and Khaleesi roots, the Seven Kingdoms, its great houses and its last line of defense at the Wall are largely in shambles, unprepared for the coming Winter and its dangers.

Hopefully with the pieces moved around a bit, everyone will be poised to assume the roles they’ll be in when it all hits the fan.

I really enjoyed this season. I was fairly bored of the series during the fourth season (not for any specific reason) but I’m back on board now.

I would agree with Bruce that ‘Hardhome’ was the best episode by far. It had me on the edge of my seat. The invasion of the zombies really was incredible.

Just on the finale – Stannis has really pushed me away. The arse. There’s no going back from what he did.

I look forward to the next season and, of course, the next book.

From a story structure point i see what they are doing here, breaking everyone down to their lowest point so they can flight back and ultimately triumph, or not. But damn that was harsh.
