Well there’s no stopping the movie machine now.  Warner Bros has announced release dates for its Green Lantern and Jonah Hex movies.  Green Lantern is expected to arrive in theaters on December 17, 2010, just in time for the holiday season.  WB made the wise decision ot move the date toward the end of the year, as the summer mega movie season is already packed with Iron Man 2, Thor, and The Green Hornet (providing Gondry gets nailed down as director) . What competition will GL face in its opening weekend?  Smurfs from Sony.  That’s going to be a tough…

I really don’t know what kind of chaos is going on with the Seth Rogen Green Hornet movie, but originally Stephen Chow was set to play the side-kick Kato, and direct the action/comedy.  Some sort of tussle over creative differences has Chow bowing out of the directing duties, but now it looks like Michel Gondry is in talks to step in. The choice of Gondry, the helmer behind off-the-beaten-path films such as “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “The Science of Sleep” and “Be Kind Rewind,” signals that the creative direction the studio and the film’s producer, Neal Moritz, are…

We’ve discussed the relative ages of superheroes a couple of times on the Major Spoilers Podcast, and while we’d all like to think truly evolved heroes are in their mid 30’s, it turns out Thor is still twenty-something.  Or at least that is the age range Marvel is looking for in the upcoming Thor movie as revealed in this casting call notice. Male MUST BE MID-LATE 20’S and SIX FEET OR TALLER. LEAD. Physically powerful, very handsome, occasionally egotistical, petulant, and wild. A natural warrior with a quick charming wit who must be genuinely and severely humbled before becoming the…

If you thought the G.I. Joe movie looked ridiculous, just wait until you see the first trailer for the Steve Oedekerk Stretch Armstrong movie.  Stretch Armstrong?  I remember that guy! “This is a new well from which to draw intellectual properties that bring a pre-awareness and nostalgia,” Schneir said. “They are drawing filmmakers who find a real emotional connection and resonance, and this is proving to be a compelling driver for motion pictures.” The toy from the 70’s also featured a monster, a dog, and an evil twin brother.  The last time a Stretch Armstrong movie tried to get made,…

Wow.  Never thought I’d see the day where I’d be writing that headline, but it appears to be true as Variety is reporting Brett Ratner and Reliance big Entertainment joining to turn Rob Liefeld’s Youngblood series into a motion picture. Most of the great graphic novels are gone, and ‘Youngblood’ is one of the few comicbooks left with tentpole potential,” Ratner told Daily Variety. “It was a real personal passion project for me, and a lot of people wanted (‘Youngblood’), but the amazing thing about the guys at Reliance is the speed with which they’re able to move.” Really?  The…

When an announced movie moves out of the script stage, and the rumors of who will star settle down, I actually start paying more attention to the press releases, when the director is finally attached.  Such is the case with the Warner Bros. DC Comics Green Lantern movie, which has just announced Martin Campbell is in negotiations to helm the superhero flick. The emergence of Campbell, who also helmed two “Zorro” films and the 007 film “GoldenEye,” puts “Green Lantern” at the top of DC properties being set for movie treatment by WB. While the studio is hoping director Chris…
