    Will Sauron be Sauron in The Rings of Power Season 2? – Let’s Get Nerdy!

    Amazon Studios The Rings of Power is here. The Second season is on its way. We want all Spoilerites to have the best viewing experience possible and have the widest knowledge base about the Second Age of Middle-Earth. This is a weekly Let’s Get Nerdy article series highlighting a different piece of Tolkien I think you need to know about!

    This post contains potential spoilers for The Rings of Power’s second season. At the time of writing these are simply rumours, but if you may want to avoid spoilers come back later and see if I was right!

    That’s right, we’re back with another deep dive into the rumours swirling around The Rings of Power season 2 as perpetuated by TheOneRing.net. Personally, I am still waiting for any kind of confirmation about the potential rights expansion I wrote about last week, but in the meantime there’s a potential framing device heading our way in season 2.

    If you were to ask me who the star or point-of-view character of The Rings of Power is I would obviously choose Galadriel. She is central to almost all of the action and she is the first character we meet in the pilot episode. The evolution of her relationship (I don’t necessarily mean this in the romantic sense, simply to imply how two characters relate to each other), over the course of the first season drove much of the drama. Halbrand comes into her life in that same pilot episode, after all.

    Per TheOneRing.net, it appears we’re should be prepared to take a deep dive into the masculine side of that equation:

    1. Season 2 is mainly Sauron’s story, told from his perspective, and opens with his retelling of history.

    2. Episode 1 is primarily Sauron’s story leading up to the breaking of the first silence.

    3. Sauron will try to deceive Galadriel again by taking the persona of Celeborn.

    4. Sauron sneaks back into Eregion as Celeborn.

    5. Season ending cliffhanger involves Galadriel making a choice to save Celeborn (Sauron?).

    6. Episode 6-7 is a huge 2-part Siege of Eregion.

    Given how the relationship between Galadriel and Halbrand unfolded in the first season of The Rings of Power I don’t have difficulty believing these could potentially be true or close-to-true. I’ll leave my immediate reaction aside for the time when episodes air and confirms or denies, but playing in a universe like The Lord of the Rings where good and evil are employed through a very black and white lens is certain to draw a strong reaction from what is already a fairly divided fanbase. 

    It’s a very bold choice!

    Having season 2 potentially be from the point of view of the male, bad-boy, potential romantic interest harkens back to a move by author Stephanie Meyer. You may remember her book Twilight and the franchise (and accompanying dedicated fanbase which sprung up around it). Maybe you don’t know that 15 years after the initial publication of Twilight Meyer released Midnight Sun – a retelling of Twilight from Edward Cullen’s perspective. 

    If Midnight Sun is perhaps an inspiration for this type of creative choice at The Rings of Power it is very clear to me where the show’s storytelling will evolve to. 

    This also backs up my Celeborn-literally-cannot-be-dead theory and I will admit to being pleased by that fact!
