Previously on Robyn Hood Vigilante: Robyn Hood has been unjustly accused of attacking Police Commissioner Gengrich. As she tries to clear her name, Robyn has been able to save Gengrich of the poison she was afflicted with. With Gengrich saved, she now looks to find the person who framed her.
ONE-EYED ARCHER
Robyn is now trying to keep a low profile but desperately wants answers. Sneaking into Police Commissioner Gengrich’s house she gets a lead on a killer known as “The Peacock”. Following the trail, she sees Peacock in a meeting with some of her former enemies including Gynt, Matter, and Goldrush. It seems like the underground was planning a heist but Robyn makes a dramatic entrance. Though struggling to defeat the enemy, she is able to dispatch the underground goons and pursues Peacock. Arriving at an abandoned warehouse he is living in, she prepares to interrogate him but she is interrupted by the police.
VERY SOLID START
When I pick reviews, I often look for ant issue 1 and to get a fresh story. I was not following Zenescope comics prior to writing for Major Spoilers and didn’t realize Robyn Hood has been going on for quite a while. Despite that, the book caught me up fairly quickly on what I needed to know without interrupting the storyline at all. So I knew what was going on right from the first read-through. In fact, this might be the first time reading a title in the middle of a series and not feeling that I needed to do a lot of background research. I applaud the writers for taking me right into the book and keeping me informed.
The book itself is well written and tells a story involving a strong female character. I think the primary concern is that the protagonist seems rather perfect. She is depicted as a cool, attractive, and calm. She dispatched a room full of criminals with only minor a couple of minor hiccups and seems to be able to keep calm even when things were desperate. What is her weakness? I wonder what the personality flaw that will come through. The solicitation implied she was on a revenge quest but I did not get that impression at all. It is a solid story but the character seems a little flat. Perhaps this is because it is a first issue and my first introduction to the title but I wanted a more rounded character. Or at the very least clearer foreshadow of what could be her struggle.
The art was very well drawn and very pretty. The most visually striking scene for me was Robyn’s dramatic entrance through the skylight. Many of the panes of glass showed a reflection of other characters and it worked for this comic. The art adds quite a bit to the dynamic nature of Robyn herself and is one of the best parts of the comic.
BOTTOM LINE: NEEDS MORE COMPLEXITY
I liked the story and the ideas but I felt it needed just a little more depth. The title has been going on for several years and I’m sure that I just don’t have the context that I needed to fully enjoy the title. 3.5 out of 5 stars for Robyn Hood Vigilante #1 by Zenescope Entertainment.
