Previously in Laura Kinney Wolverine: After the Fall of Krakoa, Wolverine dedicated herself to protecting mutants. Investigating the Treehouse, the former headquarters of the X-Men, she followed a trail to Dubai to rescue a kidnapped mutant. Now back in New York, her investigation leads her to Hell’s Kitchen, where she encounters Elektra!
Laura Kinney: Wolverine #2 begins with Wolverine and Daredevil in a brief scuffle before noticing a suspicious deal. Observing quietly, they discover a plot involving the mutant Bomb, who is being sold as part of a scheme to disrupt a protest against Mayor Luke Cage. The protest opposes his repeal of the anti-vigilante act, and the villains plan to detonate Bomb during the event. After gathering the necessary information, Wolverine and Daredevil leap into action. Despite their efforts, the buyer escapes with Bomb.
The duo meets with Luke Cage, who refuses to cancel the protest, insisting his security team can handle the situation. Undeterred, Laura and Elektra go undercover without their costumes. While Elektra pursues the handler, Laura locates Bomb, only to be stopped by the crowd as Bomb’s powers activate!
I spent some time reflecting on why the red-and-yellow palette felt so appealing on the page, and I realized much of the comic evokes the dynamic between Logan’s Wolverine and Deadpool. In many ways, this story mirrors one of theirs. It begins with a fight and ends with the heroes teaming up.
This is my main critique of Laura Kinney: Wolverine #2: it felt predictable. We’ve seen heroes fight each other countless times before. The more compelling aspect of this issue was their failure, Bomb’s power activates. While the fallout might be explored in the next issue, I wish this moment had been set up and foreshadowed more effectively. I love these characters, and the art is stunning, but the plot didn’t fully engage me until the final page.
While the narrative could have developed more, the cliffhanger might have made the issue worthwhile. That said, I’m still puzzled by the bread scent thing, it might be a reference that isn’t obvious to me. Perhaps understanding that would have addressed some of my concerns. With all that in mind, Laura Kinney: Wolverine #2 earns 3.5 out of 5 stars.
