Previously in Jonny Quest: Stranded in a most unexpected way, the Quest Team must trek to the other side of the world in hopes of gaining the help of a longtime ally. But there’s no guarantee that familiar allegiances are still in effect in their strange new situation, as an old foe launches another terrifying assault aimed at ensuring that Jonny, Hadji, Race, Dr. Quest, and Bandit never make it back home!
THE PAST IS PROLOGUE
After an unexpected electrical storm caused Dr. Quest’s Quantum Counter to overload and throw them six decades into their own future, the Quest Team has to deal with the terrifying possibility of being trapped in the year 2024. Fortunately, their Palm Key headquarters isn’t as abandoned as it seemed, and they have the assistance of its sole occupant: Seventy-something Jonathan Quest! Jonathan is able to use his futuristic computers to analyze the device and figure out where they can find replacement parts, but before they can source them, Dr. Zin’s robots attack once more. Realizing that time is running out, they set out for Tokyo, only for Jonathan to request a detour to Kolkata in the hopes of recruiting a little more help.
But whatever happened between Jonathan and the Hadji of 2024 puts that entire plan in jeopardy.
BUT WHO AWAITS THEM IN JAPAN?
While I enjoy the tension-building as we reveal the team’s future status quo, it is a little bit of a bummer to find that the Mssrs. Quest and Singh are no longer as close as brothers in the modern day, especially after the last issue’s reveal of Race and Benton’s graves. (Granted, it’s been sixty years, and it’s unlikely that either man led the kind of lifestyle that would allow them to live into their 100s, but still.) There’s also a tease from Doctor Zin about his “operative” in Japan, leading me to speculate about the initials JB and their real adventures. Artwise, this issue is actually a step up from last time around, which wasn’t bad at all. Doctor Zin’s flying fortress is a really cool design, and the reveal of grown-up Hadji ends up being the most dramatic moment in the issue. Casey and Piriz are in absolute sync, delivering drama, subtle humor, and best of all, character designs that are recognizably Doug Wildey’s while bearing Piriz’s own style.
BOTTOM LINE: I HOPE IT’S WHOM I THINK IT IS
All in all, Jonny Quest #2 keeps up the quality from last time, modernizing elements of JQ while respecting the source material, all with excellent art and coloring, as well as a story that emphasizes the humanity of the characters, earning 4.5 out of 5 stars overall. Readers who only vaguely remember Jonny Quest will be able to connect with the story, while the die-hard Questors will appreciate the attention to detail, such as finally canonizing Hadji’s surname, a detail previously only seen in The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest circa 1996.
