Amazon Studios is producing a piece of struck work inspired by the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. We want all Spoilerites to have the best viewing experience possible and have the widest knowledge base about the Second Age of Middle-Earth. This is a weekly Let’s Get Nerdy article series highlighting a different piece of Tolkien I think you need to know about!
A figure who has loomed large over The Lord of the Rings fandom in the past couple years has been Galadriel. I’ve written about her extensively as well as beginning to explore some of her most important relationships – including her husband Celeborn. While Galadriel and Gil-Galad (who I’ve been obsessed with since I was a child and wrote about a couple weeks ago for this series), are Noldor Elves there are several other subsections of elves to explore including Celeborn’s people! Today we are diving into the world of the Sindar Elves!
One of the most common Elvish languages you will read or hear when engaging with the works of J.R.R. Tolkien is Sindarin – the language of the Sindar Elves. To continue our language lesson: you may also be familiar with the phrase Grey Elves and wonder what exactly that entails? It’s derived from the word Sindar which means Grey People – hence Sindar Elves and Grey Elves being one and the same. Sindar Elves arrived in waves and the final group to arrive was sometimes referred to as Green Elves. The Sindar are also sometimes referred to as Elves of the Twilight, which is by far my favourite name for any group of elves in any mythology ever.
Sindar Elves are the Third Elf Clan created, descendants of the Third group of Elves to immigrant from
Valinor to Middle-Earth. Most famous among these early Sindar Elves was their king – and the first leader to unite them as a clan – King of Doriath Elu Thingol. You’ll often see and hear this character referred to simply as “Thingol”.
It was under the leadership of Thingol the Sindar Elves quickly established themselves as the fairest, the most wise, and the most skillful elves in Middle-Earth.
Not too shabby for not accepting the initial invitation to come over and arriving third in Middle-Earth!
Another prominent leader of the Sindar Elves is Círdan whom I have written about here before and has been a prominent figure in the rumour mills of the Tolkien fandom for a long time now for reasons you can probably imagine.
During The Second Age of Middle-Earth when many elves were fleeing their homes in MIddle-Earth to take up sage refuge in Lindon the Sindar Elves held fast to their homes and settlements. Whether this was brave or fool-hardy is a topic for debate. With Celeborn’s rise to prominence and marriage to Galadriel several Sindar Elves and Green Elves followed their leadership along with another group of Elves called Silvan Elves. Through intermingling and sharing of culture the elves we recognize from Lothlórien were born. They were consider to live more “rustic” than some of their peers.
