Quite a while ago, we heard that Scalped was being considered for a television series, but ever since we talked about the series on the Major Spoilers Podcast, things have been very quiet, until yesterday, when WGN and DC Entertainment announced a pilot production.
While WGN America may be in the process of being sold off, the network continues to buy into new television series, and Scalped looks to be the latest headed toward a pilot.
“Scalped,” from DC Entertainment and Warner Horizon Television, revolves around a power struggle among Native American leaders of a reservation. It is envisioned as having a largely Native American cast.
Scalped is a critically acclaimed 60 issue crime/western comic book series written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by R. M. Guéra, published monthly by Vertigo Comics. Issue #1 was published on January 3, 2007.
The series focuses on the Oglala Lakota inhabitants of the fictional Prairie Rose Indian Reservation in modern-day South Dakota as they grapple with organized crime, rampant poverty, drug addiction and alcoholism, local politics and the preservation of their cultural identity.
It looks like Geoff Johns will serve as one of the executive producers for the series, which makes sense, considering his title at DC Entertainment. Doug Jung will also serve as an executive producer. Once the pilot is complete it will be up to WGN to decide if the show will be given a series commitment, and we’ll all have to wait and see if we even get to see the pilot.
