IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
CITIZEN JACK #3
Writer: Sam Humphries
Artist: Tommy Patterson
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Jack and his demon make a bloody mess at the national convention.
CHRIS: Oh boy, do I love me some Citizen Jack. Just the perfect mix of cynicism, biting humor and demons. Humphries has done such a great job in writing the main character Jack, you almost feel for him even though he’s a worthless pile. Some of the best off the wall art you’re sure to find in a comic too. Great stuff for the modern comic reader and hater of all things political.
EARTH 2 SOCIETY #8
Writer: Dan Abnett
Artist: Jorge Jimenez
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: A bold new era begins on Earth-2! The heroes have decided to take leadership roles in this still-rebuilding world. But power soon becomes absolute power, and the people of Earth-2 quickly discover they’ve trusted in the wrong heroes!
ROB: The literal world-building of Earth 2 has been my favorite thing going on for DC the last few months. Abnett’s done good work with these characters and it’s been interesting to see how this new world has played out.
EXTRAORDINARY X-MEN #5
Writer: Jeff Lemire
Artist: Humberto Ramos
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The clock is winding down for mutantkind and one of the X-Men’s oldest foes has come to speed up the process: MISTER SINISTER has returned! And he’s bringing the X-Men face-to-face with their greatest fear… As the first chapter of EXTRAORDINARY X-MEN races to its exciting conclusion, one thing’s for sure for this team of all-new, all-different X-Men: Not everyone will emerge unscathed.
ROB: I always like Sinister as the villain. He always feels more truly villainous than many. And of course, I can never turn down a Ramos book.
GUTTER MAGIC #1
Writer: Rich Douek
Artist: Brett Barkley
Publisher: IDW Publishing/Comics Experience
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Cinder Byrnes has been trying to lie, cheat, and steal his way into wizardry his entire life, and he’s finally got the key to unlocking the power of magic. But first, he needs to stay one step ahead of the sorcerous crime lord that wants him dead. Writer Rich Douek and Artist Brett Barkley present an action-packed urban fantasy tale, set in a modern New York City where World War II was fought with magic.
WAYNE: It was almost exactly a year ago that I first reviewed this comic when it was released from another publisher. It’s still as good as it was then, so I highly recommend it! I love any comic that makes sense out of magic, so this one’s a keeper!
InSEXts #2
Writer: Marguerite Bennett
Artist: Ariela Kristantina
Publisher: AfterShock Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Free of their captor, the lovers explore their freedom, their love, and the monstrous new transformations of which they are capable. But when their thirst for revenge deepens, a sleek, vicious new predator creeps into London, threatening to destroy all they hold dear. This new monthly series is the brainchild of writer Marguerite Bennett (A-Force, Angela, Red Sonja) and artist Ariela Kristantina (Wolverines, Deep State).
WAYNE: This fascinating and different comic really blew me away with its debut issue last month, so I’ll be after it like crazy! I’ve never read anything like it, so I encourage you to dive in as well!
LEGEND OF WONDER WOMAN #1
Writer: Renae De Liz
Artist: Ray Dillon
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: A new WONDER WOMAN 9-issue miniseries begins here with a story written and pencilled by Renae De Liz (The Last Unicorn)! In the beginning there was only chaos. But Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, saw a better future-and eventually, her daughter would be destined to bring that new world to life! Before her ultimate fate unfolds, though, Diana of Themyscira must learn the important lessons of an Amazonian childhood!
CHRIS: I don’t know how this one slipped by me! I’m going to blame having another kid (and will continue to use that excuse as long as possible) but I’m glad to see Wonder Woman actually getting multiple titles out at a time. This will be her fifth(?), so lets hope it’s actually decent. The solicitation has me a bit concerned but I’m always down to support a Wonder Woman comic, so lets do this!
STEPHEN: I was really surprised at how good this book was when I read it for this week’s Major Spoilers Podcast. This is a fantastic coming of age tale of the Amazon warrior princess, and I think if the storytelling continues to explore Wonder Woman’s desire to be a leader and a warrior, this will be one of the best Wonder Woman stories of all time.
MIGHTY MORPHIN’ POWER RANGERS #0
Writers: Kyle Higgins, Steve Orlando, Mairghread Scott
Artists: Hendry Prasetya, Corin Howell, Daniel Bayliss
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: It’s Morphin Time! Saban’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers make their BOOM! Studios comic debut in this kick-off #0 issue, which sets the stage for the rest of the series. After escaping Rita Repulsa’s mind control, Tommy Oliver, the Green Ranger, joins up with the rest of the Power Rangers to combat her never-ending evil plans. Any semblance of a normal life is gone for Tommy now, but with his newfound family there lies hope for a brighter path. Includes the short story from the San Diego Comic-Con exclusive Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comics, and the first installment of a Bulk and Skull-centric adventure.
DAVID: I’m excited for a more mature take on the franchise with such beautiful art. While I hope they don’t lose too much of the fun campiness, I am excited for a new layer of depth to be added.
SECRET WARS #9
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Esad Ribic
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: GENESIS!
CHRIS: Let’s just skip all the jokes about the extreme lateness, the fact that most Marvel titles are well in to their respective stories making this already feel dated, and that this is issue eight of nine. They’ve all been made, and a lot by me. I’ve waited this long for the ending so there’s damn near nothing that will keep me away from this. From what I’ve heard, it’s amazing and well worth it. I’m skeptical but am holding out hope. I think we can all agree it’s not going to end well for Reed Richards…
SUPERMAN AMERICAN ALIEN #3 of 7
Writer: Max Landis
Artist: Joelle Jones
Cover Artist: Ryan Sook
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: When his plane crash-lands in the middle of the ocean, 21-year-old Clark Kent finds himself at a raging party on a massive yacht and is mistaken for the guest of honor: billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne! Illustrated by Joëlle Jones (Mockingbird, Ladykiller), the third issue of SUPERMAN: AMERICAN ALIEN is sure to have everyone talking!
WAYNE: The first two issues have taken Clark where no man of steel has gone before, so I’m ready for this third book of the miniseries. And it’s always great when Clark Kent meets Bruce Wayne, regardless of when it happens in their lives! A must-have!
WEB WARRIORS #3
Writer: Mike Costa
Artist: David Baldeon
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Electro’s amassed an army of alternate-reality evildoers! Fortunately, there’s a team of heroes from across the SPIDER-VERSE who are ready to stop ’em! Featuring an ending that’s sure to SHOCK you!
ROB: I like teams, I like Spider-Man, there’s no surprise I like this book. And it’s been interesting to get to see more of the new Multiverse.
ROBOT OVERLORD: I WILL ADMIT, THESE ARE SOME GREAT BOOKS! WHAT WILL YOU BE BUYING THIS WEEK? USE THE COMMENT SECTION BELOW!
