Warner Bros. Animation has released the first official image of the new Thundercats.
Press Release
Roaring to life through WBA and Studio4°C’s use of the Japanese animated artistry of anime, “ThunderCats” characters Lion-O, Mumm-Ra, Panthro, Cheetara and others will spring off the screen with realistic cat-like characteristics inconceivable in previous incarnations.
The new “ThunderCats” will appeal to viewers who have loved the characters all their lives as well as young newcomers to the franchise. A sweeping tale combining swords and science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes, the grand origin story of Prince Lion-O’s ascension to the throne – and of those who would thwart his destiny at any cost – takes on epic dimensions in this sharp new telling. As the forces of good and evil battle each other in the quest for the fabled Stones of Power, Lion-O and his champions learn valuable lessons of loyalty, honor and mortality in every episode.
“ThunderCats” is executive produced by Sam Register (“Teen Titans,” “Ben 10,” “Batman: The Brave and the Bold”). Michael Jelenic (“Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” “Wonder Woman”) and Ethan Spaulding (“Avatar: The Last Airbender”) are the producers.

After the disappointment that was Young Justice this past weekend (and understanding exactly what Matthew meant about first impressions), I really, REALLY want this to be watchable. Cheetara & Tigra look the coolest to me, but it’s the writing that will make or break it (and lately, a lot of CN’s stuff has been pretty broken).
I’ve actually been enjoying Young Justice.
Then again, I also enjoyed The Batman. So, take me with a grain of salt.
There’s elements of YJ I want to like, but when the first episode I watched could be summed up as “entire team treats token female teammate like shit until she saves them from their own incompetence”, that’s not a good first impression. Still, like The Batman, it’s trying.
(BTW, never really watched The Batman but thought the designs were interesting.)
Is one of them really holding a gun and a whip?
Tigra. Pretty sure the bolo whip was his go-to weapon the first time around. Not sure on the gun.
This reminds me of the He-Man cartoon re-design a few years ago. I didn’t much care for that one. Maybe, just maybe, this will be better. But I’m not holding my breath.
At the very least, maybe if they make a toy line I can finally replace my Sword of Omens toy that my sister’s kids stole from me.
Track them down and pull their fingernails out one by one until they give it up.
If they don’t give it up on the finger or toenails, move to smashing the fingers with a balpeen hammer.
I bet they’ll crack long before that though.
Whatever the case, you must reclaim the Sword of Omens at all cost.
I actually like the designs better for the most part. Cheetara and Tigra look cool. Panthro looks bad-ass. Lion-o is OK, but I’m not fond of his face especially. Can’t wait to see Mumm-Ra. Also, I hope there’s no Snarf or the little annoying ones, but I’m sure they will show up.
Lion-O’s face is the main thing bothering me as well, but I’m also judging by the old show and his “older” look. Until I actually see the series and how it plays out, it is kinda hard not to judge by what has come before even if I try not to.
looks good, I have high hopes judging from the pedigree of the people involved.
Show me Wily Kit, Wily Kat, and Snarf…then I will make a judgement.
At least here is a second pic:

I really would like this to be good.
However, I have deep concerns regarding the toy line undercurrent in many of these shows.
It doesn’t matter in a large way how good (or bad) a show like this is as so long as the toys sell.
The He-Man reboot from a few years back is a perfect example. The cartoon series was really good IMO, but the toys didn’t sell and the series was canned on a cliffhanger of a season finale.
Unfortunately my budget has tightened over the past few years and I have no money for toys. I might be the architect of my own demise :)
I’m excited for the remake but not too keen on the art. It seems like everything that is remade in recent memory is just made younger and with an american anime look to it.
Never watched the original, too young.
But the one on the right reminds me of Jet from Cowboy Bebop but as a feline.
I didn’t notice it before, but you are incredibly right. Is Panthro going to be the cool older guy like Jet instead of the token black guy? Because that would be a nice improvement.
doesn’t matter to me, as long as he’s not walking around in a gay firefighter’s outfit anymore.
They gave Lion-O Dragon Ball Z hair? Man, that’s retro on two levels o.O;;;
Actually the photo looks more like something out of Lodoss War.
Yeah, I think it’s closer to that than DBZ. Or more of a “general anime” style, not really like DBZ other than being semi-anime looking.
Then again, some people only really know DBZ. Can’t speak for Katzedecimal, but I know people who refer to anything anime as being “like DBZ”.
Well, some things just look like DBZ. I agree with the statement that his hair has the Saiyan style to it, which I know isn’t exclusive to the show, but it has been a popular show in the past. Just like I can see some art and instantly compare it to something like Fullmetal Alchemist or Candidate for Goddess.
Let’s see if “Thundercats, Hooooooo!” passes the editors…..
Frankly, I’m excited – they’ve really got an all-star crew from some of my favorite animated shows on there, like Ethan Spaulding and Sam Register.
Suck up! (kidding, kidding!!!)
I’m not letting myself get excited just yet, but I do hope it turns out decent. I really loved Thundercats when I was younger and I like some of the stuff the members of the creative team have worked on.
I would like to see Wily Kit, Wily Kat and Snarf just like WebMetz said. I actually wouldn’t care if they kept Snarf because he was a part of the original, but I might actually like to see what he’d be like if they retooled his character into a less irritating and more helpful member of the team. Also, I’m not sure I like the big mutton chops on Panthro, he just looks like a big old Smithy or Tavern owner from olden times (granted more catlike). I also wonder what Jaga will look like, if they show him.
ok well i m new here and would love to see an updates from the original thundercats the movie just like the new movie of transformers in this years and He-man in 1987 and G.I.joe: rise up for cobra this guys to the thundercats to see what is they storyline thank u
