Browsing: Action Figures

I really like the build a bridge idea that this new collection offers. It’s a way to guarantee the entire figure run sells out, and increases the ire of those who are looking for the short pack figure to complete the set.

Universal pictures has picked up the rights to develop a movie based on Mattel’s action figure, Major Matt Mason.  While another toy movie may not sound like a big deal, with Tom Hanks starring in the movie, it will probably get a lot more attention than the Stretch Armstrong movie. The toy line originated in 1966; Mason led an astronaut team that worked on the moon and lived in a space station. The toy was a hit in the buildup to the first manned moon mission. Mattel retired the line in the 1970s. Hanks and Gary Goetzman will produce with…

I picked up the second wave of DC’s New Gods action figures based on the designs of Jack Kirby, and as the Superman figure sat upon my shelf staring down at me with much contempt, it suddenly struck me how much Kal-El looks like Adam Carolla. Imagine Carolla donning the blue and red tights, arriving to fight Lex Luthor, and the first thing out of his mouth is “Let’s get it on!” Yeah, you’re probably right, I should stop shotgunning cases of Full Throttle at 3:00 AM. via The Strange Thoughts Inside Stephen’s Head

If you thought the G.I. Joe movie looked ridiculous, just wait until you see the first trailer for the Steve Oedekerk Stretch Armstrong movie.  Stretch Armstrong?  I remember that guy! “This is a new well from which to draw intellectual properties that bring a pre-awareness and nostalgia,” Schneir said. “They are drawing filmmakers who find a real emotional connection and resonance, and this is proving to be a compelling driver for motion pictures.” The toy from the 70’s also featured a monster, a dog, and an evil twin brother.  The last time a Stretch Armstrong movie tried to get made,…

I’ve picked up a few of the Mighty Mugg figures over the last year or so, and they are pretty neat.  Hasbro has unveiled the latest X-Men Mighty Muggs featuring Wolverine, Sabertooth, Pheonix, and Cyclops.  Of the four, I’ll probably pick up the Cyclops figure, as Jean Grey is just a little weird looking. via Hasbro

Oh, Baby!  Now this is the stuff I want to see when I go to a comic book convention – all the new action figures coming down the pipe.  Mattel always has a good booth showcasing its stuff, and if these images are an indication of what is to come, my wallet is going to by mighty thin by year’s end.

The good news is, those 6-inch figures are being done by the same group that is doing the DC Universe Classic line, which means high quality sculpts with multiple points of articulation.  Bonus ghost figures are nice, but I really want  the first wave to be a build-a-figure Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. Press Release follows Culver City, Calif. – February 4, 2009 – Sony Pictures Consumer Products and Mattel, Inc. announced today the development of a new collectible line of toys based on the world’s favorite poltergeist fighting team, the Ghostbusters, including an extensive cast of ghosts and ghostbusters – celebrating…
