Previously in X-Men: Magneto left the Quiet Council, and Hope Summers took his place. Since then, the Council has struggled to come to any agreements. To make matters worse, the world now knows that the mutants of Krakoa have conquered resurrection. With the Hellfire Gala here, there is a chance for the mutants to repair their political friendships.
A CONFLICTED PERSON
Immortal X-Men #4 takes us to the point of view of Emma Frost. She admits that she sleeps in a diamond body because diamonds do not age, and she wishes to keep her youth. At the Gala, she is attacked by a person who throws sheep’s blood at her after being ridiculed by Ambassador Mingyu, who wants the secret to resurrection.
At the next Quiet Council meeting, Emma Frost reveals that Dr. Stasis is a Mister Sinister clone and claims to be the original. This causes Mister Sinister to run with the entire Quiet Council chasing him. Sinister heads to his secret base but ultimately decides to surrender. Suddenly, he is kidnapped by a mysterious light!
THE TRUTH OF EMMA FROST
Kieron Gillen has done an excellent job characterizing the mutant nation in Immortal X-Men. Immortal X-Men #4 focused on Emma and her concerns. Seeing her openly admit that she struggles with empathy and hates feeling out of control was pleasant to read. And she really wants Krakoa to work out, but she suffers from Imposter Syndrome. This new era of mutants seems to make mutants more humane despite creating a clear divide between humans and mutants.
The political issue of resurrection has been a hot-button topic since it was introduced in the House of X/Power of X storyline. At one point, Emma ranted about why she should resurrect humans when many of them stood idly by when mutants were being killed. This is a valuable point, but she hesitates because she knows Krakoa must keep their allies. It almost feels like the Quiet Council is stepping on eggshells, and I am all for it.
Lastly, an image of Emma Frost covered in sheep’s blood is visually striking. Michele Bandini and David Curiel provided a wow factor in this issue. Overall, great work by the creative team.
BOTTOM LINE: GREAT ISSUE
I don’t know if it is my age, interest, or another random factor, but the current X-Men runs have been right up my alley. I want to know what is going next, and I often check to see what X-Men comics are being released weekly to add to my reading list. Immortal X-Men #4 is a near-perfect comic for my tastes and is a 5 out of 5 stars.
