Not long ago, my daughter wanted to see something scary, eventually deciding on a double feature of ‘Night Of The Living Dead’ and ‘The Mist.’ She was totally into Romero’s classic, but the ending left her shouting “Are you KIDDING me?”, even though she appreciated the artistic intent of the bleakness. The ending of ‘The Mist’, on the other hand, left her dismissive, pointing out that the terrible ending makes her not like the main character anymore, and that she didn’t believe the guys with flamethrowers were gonna take out the giant dinosaur-thing seen a few minutes earlier. Either way, it was one of her first experiences with movies that are conceptually good but have no idea how to end, leading to today’s anti-climactic query…
The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) reminds you that ‘Watchmen’, the story of a gritty, down-to-earth world, ends with a giant squid teleported into New York City to mimic an alien invasion, asking: Which great story has the WORST ending?

Hmmm. Great stories with bad ending. That throws out a lot of poor to middling movies that have horrible endings.
Anyways….
“La La Land” The couple is together most of the movie until the end. There is a time skip and a dream sequence of what might have been.
Harry Potter settles for a government desk job instead of becoming the best Defense Against Dark Arts teacher ever to hold that position more than one year, and he marries the female version of his best friend rather than a woman with whom he had actually developed any kind of partnered relationship.
Oh, and of course HIMYM. Robin? Really?
Haha, I loved this response.
Not necessarily the ending itself, but setup for the ending, Star Wars. Tens of thousands of ships in a planet of no apparent technology or resources, each with full crew and marines on them, each with massive energy consuming superweapons which apparently can’t navigate out of there without a single beacon? All orchestrated by a guy who already died in a big climax decades ago? Please…
