    Superman #28 Review

Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonJuly 24, 20253 Mins Read

Be careful what you wish for, my friends, because the Legion is back… and now they work for Darkseid. Your Major Spoilers review of Superman #28 from DC Comics awaits!

    Superman 28 CoverSUPERMAN #28

    Writer: Joshua Williamson
    Artist: Dan Mora
    Colorist: Alejandro Sanchez
    Letterer: Ariana Maher
    Editor: Paul Kaminski
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $4.99
    Release Date: July 23, 2025

Previously in Superman: After the events of the Dark Crisis, the future of the DC Universe has been altered, and the Legion of Super-Heroes has been reborn not in the image of Superman… but that of Darkseid. They’ve been skulking in the shadows, but it’s time for the heroes of the future to make their presence known.

    Cancel Christmas.

    WHAT WAS VALIDUS RUNNING FROM?

As Superman #28 begins, we find three unseen (but hardly unknown) characters observing and analyzing Superman’s activities, disgusted that he would not only protect the humans, but hide himself among them. In Smallville, Clark Kent has returned to his childhood home to fetch his most treasured teenage memento: His Legion of Super-Heroes flight ring. Before he can make his way to the Legion’s period, he is surprised by the voice of an old friend, Saturn Girl. But it quickly becomes clear that she isn’t the same Saturn Girl of his youthful crush, as she shows him the death of the Justice League at the hands of Cosmic Boy, and Ma Kent being electrocuted by Lightning Lad. It’s the worst-case scenario, but even the powers of Titan’s greatest telepath have their limits. When The Time Trapper (the artist formerly known as Doomsday) saves the Man of Steel, one thing is clear: Superman will need help, and The Time Trapper has someone in reserve.

    OH NO… NOT HIM!

Buuuut… you’re not going to like who it is. This story remarkably manages to move very quickly, despite the fact that it’s primarily told through conversations between Superman, his family, and his old friend. Williamson paces it all perfectly, while Dan Mora’s art brings it to life with aplomb. The fact that Mora can go from Superman quietly sitting on his bed to Cosmic Boy shattering the Watchtower and killing the Justice League, with both moments carrying emotional resonance, is nothing short of amazing. The slow build towards this reveal has been maddening, but things have finally started rolling, and I hope that whatever comes next is a satisfying resolution (and, yes, a return to form for the Legion of Super-Heroes.)

    BOTTOM LINE: PICK IT UP

In short, Superman #28 is the first salvo of a multi-part tale featuring Superman, Doomsday, and [REDACTED] against a future gone mad. Honestly, I almost wonder if these creators can make me stop hating the guest star, given that this issue’s quality earns a perfect 5 out of 5 stars overall. I don’t really want a murder Legion, but now that we’ve got one, I’m intrigued by how it all shakes down.

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.
