This review does not consider the reprint of Daredevil #170, which is also part of this collection.
Giant-Size Daredevil #1 takes the perspective of Wilson Fisk, whose desire for revenge is amplified by an unknown entity within him. He starts by setting a trap for Daredevil, leading him on a trail that includes murdering a group of hooligans who stole from him and appearing at a bar. Later, one of the Dragons attacks him, blaming Fisk for his gang’s destruction. Despite the Dragon’s advanced technology, it does minor damage to Fisk, providing another clue for Daredevil to follow. The comic ends with Daredevil and Elektra falling into the trap Fisk has set, promising a continuation of the main title.
Daredevil is an exciting comic title and usually captures a great “street-level” feel within its stories. I love Wilson Fisk as a villain. However, as I read Giant-Size Daredevil #1 and listened to Fisk’s inner monologue, I kept thinking, “Isn’t this just a repeat of the standard stories?” Given the interesting new take on Daredevil in the main series, it seems like a missed opportunity to spend so much time on the old status quo instead of exploring the latest themes.
The art in the book was decent, but at times, I felt the body proportions were awkward. Everything was detailed and had a good tone, but I’m not sure it felt right on the page.
I wanted to enjoy Giant-Size Daredevil #1 and rekindle my interest in the series, but this was a step back. The main title has some unique and exciting ideas, but this book didn’t hit those same spots for me, especially considering the cost. This comic is a 3 out of 5 stars.
