Happy Birthday, Robyn! Dive into a nostalgic journey with Robyn Hood #100, brought to you by Zenescope Entertainment!

    ROBYN HOOD #100

    Writer: Joe Brusha
Artists: Riveiro, Alessio Mariani, and Giada Belviso
    Colorist: Juan Manuel Rodriguez
    Letterer: Taylor Esposito
    Editor: David Wohl
    Publisher: Zenescope Entertainment
    Cover Price: $6.99
    Release Date: August 23rd, 2023

Previously in Robyn Hood: Robyn Locksley, the self-appointed guardian of New York and a formidable monster hunter, possesses both light and darkness within her. She has transformed from a wanted criminal in the mystical realm of Myst and New York into a figure who has reclaimed her identity and purged the darkness within her.

    A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE

Robyn Hood #100 unveils Robyn’s birthday celebrations. Shang pays her a visit, gifting her a light crystal, revealing her powers’ origins. Destined by prophecy, the crystal granted her light abilities while another force bestowed her darkness. Her early years were fraught with trials as Shang and her parents fought for her safety. Following the truth, Shang departs, prompting Robyn to venture into town. Here, she encounters Fuchs, one of her adversaries. Robyn had slain Fuchs’ sister due to her involvement in human trafficking. Misunderstood, Fuchs perceived Robyn solely as a killer. Now, Fuchs implores Robyn and Divinity’s aid in saving his corrupted daughter, Nataliya.

Nataliya is consumed by the same darkness that once plagued Robyn. The trio confronts her during a mysterious deal and intervenes. Nataliya, wielding immense power, transforms into a dire wolf. Despite Fuchs’ pleas, he cannot persuade his daughter to relinquish her darkness. However, in spite of her dangerous powers and intent, he asks Robyn and Divinity not to kill her.

Subsequently, Robyn attends a party with Liesel Van Helsing and Ghosthawk, only to be unexpectedly transported to the Shadowlands. A moral test awaits Robyn: she must choose who survives between her two friends and ultimately opts for neither. Escaping the Shadowlands, they return to a surprising revelation—a birthday party!

    AN INTERESTING SUMMARY

This double-sized issue adeptly encapsulates Robyn Hood’s journey. Readers grasp her essence and her profound growth. Robyn Hood #100 delivers intriguing moments while summarizing Robyn’s identity rather than introducing new elements. Hints of forthcoming stories are apparent, and the pacing feels appropriate. However, the story lacks excitement. While I was engaged, true exhilaration was absent, a testament to Joe Brusha’s skillful writing, albeit constrained by the issue’s scope. It appears that Joe’s (or possibly the publisher’s) intention wasn’t to introduce unique ideas. I can’t help but notice this is probably a good jumping-on point for new readers and even encouraged me to perhaps read some of the older issues I have missed.

The varied art styles attributed to different artists are noticeable throughout the narrative. While not displeasing, the rationale behind this shift remains unclear. Could these artists be returning contributors? Answers are elusive in my research. And I would prefer cohesion in artistic style within the story would have been preferable.

BOTTOM LINE: IT IS A GOOD COMIC

Despite reservations, Robyn Hood #100 stands as a well-crafted piece. There’s a sense that the writer could have delved further into other dimensions of Robyn’s development and character. Nonetheless, the cautious approach the publisher or creative team takes is understandable for this milestone issue. Considering this, I rate the book 3.5 out of 5 stars and eagerly await Zenescope’s future explorations with this character.
