Previously in Robyn Hood: Robyn Locksley was orphaned as a teenager when her mother died. Shortly after, she suffered an attack that cost her an eye. After liberating the city of Nottingham during her time in Myst, she finds herself in New York City as a private investigator and vigilante.
Robyn Hood: Spawn of Nyarlathotep delves into one of Robyn’s nightmares and memories. As a child, she was bullied because her mother was sick, and she learned to fight back. In the present, Smitty informs her about missing people, and she is the only one capable of investigating since it is connected to a monster. Robyn seeks help from Ghosthawk, but the sorcerer behind the monster incapacitates him.
Robyn realizes something happened to Ghosthawk and proceeds alone. After defeating some minor monsters, she encounters the Starspawn, a giant creature with dangerous tentacles. Robyn struggles against it and faces the possibility of death. Drawing inspiration from her dying mother, she refuses to give up and uses her magic to change her costume to white, shooting an arrow of light. The sorcerer sends the Starspawn brood to attack Robyn, but her magic proves too strong. She ultimately decides to let Ghostwolf go and confidently leaves the scene.
Handling nonlinear storytelling can be challenging, but Robyn Hood: Spawn of Nyarlathotep impressively balances Robyn’s backstory with the present. It made me contemplate how the past influences the present and how struggle can strengthen one’s resolve. Throughout the comic, I found myself rooting for both the teenage Robyn and the hero she has become. Zenescope Entertainment has done a fantastic job with its one-shots, providing clear character development and engaging storytelling. However, I must admit that the plot and the monster felt a little underwhelming. While we hear about the missing people, we don’t get a strong sense of what happened to them, and Robyn’s investigation skills are not fully utilized. Unfortunately, the limited page count restricted the exploration of these narrative elements. We could have delved deeper into the story if we had an entire double issue with 48 pages.
The art in this issue was decent. I particularly enjoyed the depiction of water. However, the character designs did not stand out to me. I never felt intimidated by the monster or in awe of Robyn’s white costume. Nevertheless, the creative team did a consistent job overall.
I thoroughly enjoyed Robyn Hood: Spawn of Nyarlathotep and believe this character has tremendous potential as she navigates her abilities. However, the price tag is quite steep. Although it offers more pages than a typical comic book, for the price, I would expect an entire 48-page comic. Instead, we only received 34 pages. Despite this, Robyn Hood: Spawn of Nyarlathotep is a 4 out of 5-star comic.
