Are they really that clueless and out of touch at DC? If they really think Telos would be “the next big thing” Im worried about how competent their current executives are. You know, maybe if they stopped stuffing only one character down to our throats and saturating whole market with only Batman related products their market share could stop diminishing? As it is now, most of their resources and attention is focused in only one character out of at least couple of dozen potential ones.
Yeah, there´s that “bu..bu..Batman sells and hes the goddamn Batman” dead horse argument but does Batman really sell so much that they can neglect every other character to his favor. Current sales and market share says nope. And I like Batman, just getting really, really tired of this whole thing that´s been going on for way too long. Theres some light at the end of tunnel, mostly because TV shows but that does not mean anything is going to change in comics.
Actually, sales data does show that Batman sells well… very well. It is the benchmark by which all other sales data is judged against when Diamond releases its index numbers. In August, Batman was DC’s number one selling book. Justice League and Justice League of America were the 2nd and 3rd best sellers for DC. Harley Quinn (which could be argued is a “bat book” was the 4th largest selling title for DC in August, and it sold roughly half of Batman #43. So yeah, Batman sells, and sells very well for DC Comics.
And just to clear up any bias – you know what sells well for Marvel? Spider-man and Star Wars. It’s no wonder we are getting a flood of spider-man and star wars related books, because for Marvel, those are the books that sell.
Yes, I agree that Bat-books are easily DC´s biggest sellers. Also, some of the diminishing market share is a result of Marvel acquiring Star Wars too. My point was that maybe Batman doesnt need all the push. Could it be better to have few other decent sellers too by putting more resources to some other books as well? Do a high profile non Batman centric event or storyline for a change, or get couple of big name creators to them. We get Dark Knight Returns 3 but how about Power of Shazam 2, All-Star Superman 2 or maybe new high profile Flash or Green Lantern too?
