Today, we kick off Wonder Woman Week at Major Spoilers.
“Why Wonder Woman Week?” You ask.
Why not!?
Everyone is eager to celebrate Batman, Superman, Wolverine and even Cyclops, but what about one of the greatest comic book heroines ever created? For decades now, I’ve been fascinated with Wonder Woman, the female warrior from Themyscira, who left Paradise Island to travel among mortals and encourage them to change their ways – or kick the butts of those who want to oppress others. There’s something truly magical about the character (beyond the fact that she is a demigod), and she definitely is one of my all time favorite superheroes. I can’t think of Superman or Batman without thinking of Wonder Woman right there at their side, as an equal.
For nearly 70 years, Princess Diana has had some fantastic adventures, fought side by side with the greatest heroes of DC Comics, and has proven time and time again that she is just as capable as every other hero that wants to match wits and power with her. Often, she is willing to do what others are not, simply because it makes the most sense and doesn’t require a huge debate with six other heroes to get things done.
Though one can raise questions about her creator and his intent, her wardrobe, and other questionable story elements, for me, the best take on Wonder Woman is when she moves through the story with a grace that few others posses. She can be witty, wise, charming, and of course beautiful. I think she is often dismissed by others as “just a girl”, but in this day and age, we should be embracing the concept of a hero like Diana instead of rejecting her. Writers and artists should be doing everything they can to make Wonder Woman the best character she can be, and her status among comic book fans and the public should and could be much higher.
While I’m sure the public relations department at DC Comics and Warner Bros. will send out tons of stuff about Wonder Woman when she turns 70 next year, but why wait?
All this week, we celebrate Wonder Woman with features and articles from out talented pool of writers and staff members. This isn’t some gimmick cooked up between Major Spoilers and DC Comics. Wonder Woman Week is a where comic book fans share their love of the character with you. You’ll find out why we love her and why we find her one of the great heroes – and maybe you’ll discover what we think needs to be fine tuned to make her even better. I hope you will join us by engaging in meaningful conversations and dialogue, and will share these posts with your friends, as we celebrate Wonder Woman Week at Major Spoilers.
