A

STEPHEN: Yup! Still on board! Pick it up!
WAYNE: The Bat-book I’d been so impatiently waiting for just keeps shining from week to week! Every Wednesday, an issue of this comic hits the stands, so I’m one very happy Bat-fan! Oh, and what a cool cover!
CAPTAIN MARVEL #5
Writer: Kelly Sue DeConnick
Artist: David Lopez
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: • Ever since she set off on her latest “adventure,” Carol Danvers has had her butt handed to her at every turn.
• She’s done with that nonsense. Let’s start flipping some tables, shall we?
• Tic, the Rocket Girl, and Jackie, the Warlord, are getting in on the “Oh no you di’n’t!” action too!
MATTHEW: Captain Marvel has long been considered the primary female hero of the Marvel Universe, according to editorial, but it’s good to see her solo book earning that title with great art and a fun story. Good stuff!
DEATH VIGIL #1
Writer: Stjepan Sejic
Artist: Stjepan Sejic
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Forty pages of story and art in this contemporary fantasy adventure series written and painted by STJEPAN SEJIC. Gifted? Join the Death Vigil in their ongoing war against the ever-growing power of the Primordial Enemy! The only catch is you have to die first. Become a corporeal immortal Death Knight and obtain reality-altering weaponry in the never-ending battle between good and evil.
RODRIGO: I’m a big fan of Stjepan Sejic’s art, so I’m curious to see what he brings to comics as a writer.
GRAYSON #1
Writer: Tim Seeley
Artist: Mikel Janin
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Dick Grayson. Former sidekick. Former Super Hero. Former dead man. And now…agent of Spyral?!
A thrilling new chapter of Dick Grayson’s life begins in this new, ongoing series. It’s a super-spy thriller that will shock you and prove one thing: You might think you know Nightwing – but you don’t know Dick.
JASON: I’m picking this up because I’m a big Nightwing fan, but I’m a little hesitant. This same creative team penned the final issue of Nightwing and it was ten pages of Batman and Dick punching each other in the face. Hopefully, Grayson can only go up from here.
MATTHEW: Worst. Tagline. EVER. This book might actually be more entertaining if it’s the awkward train-wreck that I secretly expect it to be…
RODRIGO: I’m not going to lie here, guys this looks pretty bad… but this is exactly the sort of train-wreck that only comes along every once in a while.
STEPHEN: I don’t know dick? OH, I get it… very clever… by which I mean, it’s not. But still… I do love me some Dick Grayson, and I like many of the things Marvel is doing right now, so this might be a nice smash-up… or not.
WAYNE: I have to admit that I’m kind of nervous about this one, but I have to know what’s happening to one of my all-time favorite comics characters. I’m going to miss the super hero and hope that if it’s going to crash and burn, it does so quickly so Nightwing can return!
FANTASTIC FOUR #7
Writer: James Robinson
Artist: Leonard Kirk
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: ORIGINAL SIN: THE FATEFUL FOUR PART II The FANTASTIC FOUR are being torn apart at their very foundation! Will Ben be able to cope with the Original Sin he’s learned about Johnny? Will Sue and Reed lose FRANKLIN and the rest of the FUTURE FOUNDATION? Will what’s left of the team be able stop their headquarters from being shut down by…THE AVENGERS?
JASON: The “sin” that was revealed last issue is definitely cause for Ben Grimm to want to kill Johnny Storm. Seriously, it’s a pretty heinous crime. I’m excited to see how Robinson deals with this story thread, because I don’t see these two being friends for much longer.
NEW SUICIDE SQUAD #1
Writer: Sean Ryan
Artist: Jeremy Roberts
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: The world has changed for Task Force X, a.k.a. the Suicide Squad. Director Amanda Waller no longer has the autonomy she once had. New members disrupt the team dynamic. And the team takes on an international scope. New members Joker’s Daughter, Deathstroke and Black Manta join Harley Quinn and Deadshot for a mission in the most dangerous and unpredictable place in the world: Vladimir Putin’s Russia!
MATTHEW: While I’m not happy with the defanging of Amanda Waller, I’m interested in where this one might be going. Ripped-from-the-headlines adventures with real consequences could be fun…
RED CITY #2
Writer: Daniel Corey
Artist: Mark Dos Santos
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “The case gets more complicated, and Cal comes under heavy scrutiny from Red City PD and the Mayor’s office. He teams up with Angel, a woman from his past, and the fight spills onto the streets in a high-octane hail of bullets.”
WAYNE: The first issue of this title was terrific, so I’m greatly looking forward to this second outing! Mr. Corey (of Moriarty fame) is mashing two genres I love – murder mystery and sci fi – into a compelling read! Don’t miss it!
SPIDER-MAN 2099 #1
Writer: Peter David
Artist: Will Sliney
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: ALL-NEW SERIES FROM THE PAGES OF AMAZING SPIDER-MAN! The book you have been demanding for months finally hits the stands! Miguel O’Hara is Spider-Man in the year 2099 but he’s currently stuck in the year 2014. He was stranded here by his father who is the head of an evil corporation called Alchemax in 2099. But in 2014, Alechmax has just been formed and Miguel has a chance to stop its corruption before it starts! You’d think being a man out of time would make you a man without enemies, but Spider-Man 2099 is about to discover that he’s not the only one hoping for a better tomorrow, one that might be ensured by The Adjustor eliminating Miguel from the time stream altogether! Join comics legend (and Spider-Man 2099 creator) Peter David and breakthrough artist Will Sliney (Superior Spider-Man Team-up) for the most adventure you’ll find in a book this side of the twenty second century!
GEORGE: I’m a huge Miguel O’Hara mark, meaning I’m definitely checking this one out. I’m excited that Peter David, the original writer of Spider-Man 2099, is at the helm, but I do wish that this series was set in 2099 rather than the present day.
ROB: I liked seeing Miguel back in the Superior Spider-Man series, and I’m excited to see him coming back in his own series now.
SPREAD #1
Writer: Justin Jordan
Artist: Kyle Strahm
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.50
SOLICITATION: Ten years ago, we dug too deep. We unleashed something ancient that couldn’t be controlled. Something that couldn’t be stopped, twisting everything it touched into more of itself.
The Spread.
Humanity was nearly destroyed before we found a way to slow the Spread to a crawl. Now, deep inside the quarantined zone, one man has found the key to stopping it forever: a baby girl. And if he can save her, he might save the world.
GEORGE: Put a baby strapped to a squid on the cover of your comic, and I will probably buy it. It doesn’t hurt that Justin Jordan’s “The Strange Talent of Luther Strode” was a strange, stunning piece of work making me hungry to read more.
SUPERIOR FOES OF SPIDER-MAN #13
Writer: Nick Spencer
Artist: Steve Lieber
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: • The world’s most dangerous villains are up against the world’s most dangerous thing – THE TRUTH!
• The sleeper hit of the year continues, by Spencer, Lieber & Rosenberg!
GEORGE: The Shocker make the best Rhino (and Boomerang’s Kraven cosplay ain’t too shabby either).
SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN #10
Art by:Tony S. Daniel
Cover by:Matt Banning, Tony S. Daniel
Written by:Charles Soule
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: 3.99
SOLICITATION: Twelfth level intellect Lois Lane uses all her new Psi Power against the God of War, Diana, in the ultimate showdown! And Superman must go up against the new Cyborg Superman as an invading armada arrives in space!
RODRIGO: If you take out the words “twelfth level intellect”, “Psi Power” and “invading armada” this is a Betty Vs. Veronica comic.
TMNT MICRO SERIES TP VOL 01
Writer: Brian Lynch, Tom Waltz
Artist: Franco Urru & Various
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $17.99
SOLICITATION: Four stand-alone tales centering on each Turtle! Raphael is looking for answers but finds Casey Jones instead. Michelangelo explores New York City and stumbles onto a high-stakes heist. Donatello goes incognito to a science fair and finds out that it’s being put on by none other than Baxter Stockman. And finally, Leonardo does battle with the ruthless Foot Clan!
ROB: I’ve been raving about the Turtle comics since first reading them and continue to enjoy them getting better. These stories make for the best introduction to the current set of the franchise and you’d be mistaken to miss them.
