While it may not have the most complicated story line (punch-punch-dodge-block-FINISH HIM!), Mortal Kombat has been a pretty heavy hitter in the videogame market since its debut in the early ’90s. Several movies have been made based on the franchise, but for the life of me I can only remember two… Regardless, the franchise has caught the eye and mind of someone in H’wood and it looks like we’re going to see a brand new Mortal Kombat movie in 2013.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Kevin Tancharoen, choreographer for Madonna and Britney Spears, will direct the new movie. How did he get the gig? Some of you may remember Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan in that Mortal Kombat: Rebirth 10-part web series from earlier this year. That calling card was all the studios needed to give the short film a big screen go ahead.
Right now, no actors are attached, but Oren Uziel has been hired to pen the big screen script (he also wrote Mortal Kombat: Rebirth), with Dave Newstadter and Walter Hamada producing. IMDB has the movie scheduled for 2013.
