If technology didn’t exist at the level we now experience it, many devices we’re used to would seem like magic to us. For example, if someone in the Middle Ages pulled out an iPhone, anyone seeing it wouldn’t have any idea how it works. Well, in Raphael Moran’s latest comic TechnoMancer, that’s something of the trade’s basic premise. The set-up is a little different, though. The book will hit comics shops this month!

This week, I have a great conversation with Sterling Gates, who has been bringing many DC Comics stories and characters to life including Supergirl, a Man of Steel prequel book and, until it’s recent cancellation, Justice League’s Vibe. This interview took place before the recent news, but Sterling gives us so much good information about the character and diversity in comics that I had to share that with you. For many years, comics had to be dark and depressing. A hero also had to have a lot of inner conflict, sometimes even fighting his or her fathers’ cousin twice removed from another dimension. Oh, the conflict! Thankfully, today’s storytelling is much wider in scope. You can find the darker stories if you want, but you can also read tales that are more straightforward and heroic, that are even suitable for all ages! (Don’t run in horror, kids! As a big, long-time Batman fan, I’m particularly fascinated by two things going on in that family of comics at DC.

When I see a long-lived character get a great update, I love it! That’s what happened with The Owl. The initial four-issue miniseries just concluded this week.

“The only constant in life is change.” Boy, is that ever true as far as comics! It wasn’t that long ago that I used to read, on what seemed a daily basis, of the latest comics creator who was signing an exclusive contract with someone. That seems to have slowed down to a trickle, though it still happens. What’s up with that?

First, the bad news. Rumor has it that John Layman is leaving this title to work on Catwoman for DC. I’ve been greatly enjoying his stories as well as his focus on the “job” aspect of being Batman, so we got a lot of tales about the Dark Knight versus his foes, which I always love.

A friend and I were talking online recently about the number of “pulp heroes” getting their own new comics. “I want new stories and new characters, not these old guys and girls. Why can’t they come up with something new and different?” The answer I gave him was one given to me by a sales expert I got to chat with once: Nostalgia sells!

This week, I have a special conversation with Robert Venditti, who created The Surrogates (which was turned into a major motion picture). He’s doing terrific things with Valiant’s X-O Manowar, which he discusses, including the upcoming Unity event, which will begin in November. We also talk about his work on DC’s Green Lantern, so don’t miss it! The mysteries of Earth-3 are slowly being revealed in DC’s New 52, and this issue clears up some of them.

The comics industry has always recognized that they need new readers to keep the business going. After all, those of us who have been reading comics for decades aren’t always going to be here to make our weekly jaunts to the local comics shop, as sad as it is to point that out. Most recently, DC launched the New 52 and Marvel began Marvel NOW in order to create places where fans who haven’t been reading their books for a long time could find a “jumping on” point and give comics a shot.
