Amazon Studios The Rings of Power is here. The Second season is on its way. We want all Spoilerites to have the best viewing experience possible and have the widest knowledge base about the Second Age of Middle-Earth. This is a weekly Let’s Get Nerdy article series highlighting a different piece of Tolkien I think you need to know about!
This is a question I see and hear about The Rings of Power a lot. Living in the middle of the streaming wars we are seeing more shows canceled at what feels like the height of their power with vocal fanbases behind them. We’re even more used to seeing shows canceled after their third season because it’s an open secret that the streaming giants only sign talent (above and below the line), to three seasons then when contract negotiations become “too expensive” the project is simply cut.
I’ve referred in the past to this expansive Empire Magazine interview which the two co-showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay laid out so many of their hopes, dreams, plans, and intentions for The Rings of Power which included the following quote from Payne:
“There are things in the first season that don’t pay off until Season 5. We even know what our final shot of the last episode is going to be.”
Season 5.
Season 5.
Season 5.
If you remember the days of Star Trek series with 24 – 36 episodes a season running for 7 seasons and still leaving questions unanswered and stories on the ground many of the audience would have loved to see more deeply explored the “Season 5” may not seem as wild as the children of the streaming generation might feel this to be.
Payne also stated about the trajectory of The Rings of Power:
“They knew from the beginning that was the size of the canvas … this was a big story with a clear beginning, middle and end.”
The clear end certainly seems to be The Last Alliance of Men and Elves I’ve written so much about as part of this series with perhaps an epilogue moment to nod directly to the characters or events of The Lord of the Rings.
Yes, just like you I am imagining the Elijah Wood/Frodo Baggins cameos in The Hobbit trilogy. Perhaps even with the very same actor and characters.
It’s the goal posts in between which are a little grey. Important events I could imagine being season-long dramatic staples of The Rings of Power:
- The Fall of Númenor
- The War of the Elves and Sauron
- Founding of Rivendell
- The Siege of Rivendell
- The Siege of Linden
- First Appearance of the Nazgûl
- The Last Alliance of Men and Elves
- The Fall of Sauron
That’s already eight key ideas which, in my geeky opinion, could easily fill a season of The Rings of Power.
In the meantime, it certainly seems as though there is a plan for the trajectory of The Rings of Power and knowing 5 seasons is the goal and there is more than enough canon (to address nothing of the canon they are inventing for the show with breakout stars like Ismael Cruz Córdova’s Arondir), to fill anywhere from 50 – 100 episodes depending on the order.
