Previously in Lifeformed: Welcome to the new series by Scout Comics! Cleo is an 11-yo student with a little bit of stage fright. But when an alien invasion starts, she must learn how to fight for her own survival.
UNLIKELY COMPANIONS
Lifeformed #1 is a story about Cleo who has a school presentation but ends up hiding in the bathroom. When her father, Alex, comes to pick her up, she laments about how it is easy for her to talk to him but not to her entire class. They share a dinner and a dance party until they look outside the window to see weird ships in the air. Both run outside to see what is going on, and they see an epic fight between alien and earth ships. Unfortunately, many of them are crashing down! Alex is impaled by debris and dies in front of Cleo.
Before Cleo has a chance to react, an alien comes out of a crashed spaceship and touches Alex’s body. He then takes on the form of Alex and knows Cleo’s name. He tells her to run and protects her by fighting off several alien goo construct. After the fight, both Cleo and this alien run off to safety.
TRAUMA
I was a little heartbroken when reading Lifeformed #1. This story went from 0 to 100 in just a few pages and the creative team made me attached to Alex very quickly. And just as quick they took him away. I spent a bit of time trying to think of how a child would process this tragedy. She saw her father die and a creature take on his likeness. How traumatic is that? And to be honest, I am all for this kind of story. Scout Comics have been doing a good job supplying engaging stories as of late and this comic is no different.
Lifeformed #1 is a coming-of-age story, but I wonder if there is this idea of chosen family with the aliens. Is Cleo going to find a parent in whoever has taken on Alex’s form? What an insane thought and I am intrigued about where the plot line is going to go.
BOTTOM LINE: GOOD START
I really liked how fast I was hooked into Lifeformed #1. Right from the beginning I was interested in Cleo’s character and her relationship with her father. Then you are thrown into the plot, and you are sitting on the edge of your seat. This is a pretty high recommendation from me and a solid 4 out of 5 stars. Looking forward to next issue!
