    Power Rangers Prime #9 Review

Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonAugust 12, 20253 Mins Read

There’s a new Green Ranger in town, and… I’m pretty sure you’ll be surprised. Your Major Spoilers review of Power Rangers Prime #9 from BOOM! Studios awaits!

Previously in Power Rangers Prime: The Green Ranger comes to Angel Grove and changes the balance of the Prime Rangers forever! But that’s not the only surprise in store when the VR Troopers come face-to-face with the first Prime Zord. Will the Prime Rangers be able to save Lauren from being taken in by the Eltarians?

    TH’ WEARIN’ OF TH’ GREEN!

Moments after last issue’s ambush by the VR Troopers, things looked dark for the Power Rangers… until a Sixth Ranger appeared to help balance the odds. As we open Power Rangers Prime #9, Rita Repulsa looks back on 10,000 years (and seemingly multiple universes) full of memories, remarking on the one thing that she has learned to believe in over the centuries: Survival. She quickly puts a beatdown on the Troopers, while the Prime Rangers watch in awe, but when the numbers game catches up with her, Rita remembers another of her lessons. Since the Pink and Blue Rangers have themselves a monster in the infant Tyranno Zord, she goes old-school and makes it GROW. That’s when Red Ranger Lauren steps in to stop her from destroying them by turning herself in! Accepting the partial win, the VR Troopers return with their prisoner in custody, they discover that the rules have changed, and the Eltarians want ALL the Rangers rounded up and locked away.

And they’ve sent in a specialist to do it.

    IT’S A SLOW BURN

I admit that, as an occasionally impatient reader, I have chafed at the deliberate pacing of Power Rangers Prime during the first eight issues. Now that we’re nearing issue twelve, I have to admit, it’s working for me. I feel like I know these Rangers (three brand new, three familiar-ish) as well as I know Billy, Kimberly, Zack, and their friends. Heck, given the thumbnail characterizations of early episodes of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, we probably know this gang better, and that makes this issue a doozy, especially when we discover the connection that the Eltarian Ranger-Hunter has to Junmor, the Black Ranger. It’s an impressive issue, especially in terms of the visuals. Rita’s morphed form evokes a much more detailed and complex version of Tommy’s original American Green costume, and her blitz on the VR Troopers is pretty gorgeous. I was a bit confused about the depiction of Kaitlin’s duplicating powers, but that’s one of the few real layout issues. The final page close-up is chilling, which isn’t easy, given that it features a blue-skinned, bald man with a facial scar, something that could easily come across as goofy.

    BOTTOM LINE: A GOOD ONE

Not only is Power Rangers Prime #9 a good individual chapter, it has the unexpected effect of making me happier with the previous issues’ pacing/script, moving us ever closer to the full-scale Ranger team I’ve been wanting to see with strong art (and a giant Zord), earning 4 out of 5 stars overall. I look forward to seeing if Rita, who professes no ideology or heroic urges, stays as the team’s Sixth, but no matter what happens, this is a comic worth a look.

Why Can't I Stop Thinking About Elizabeth Banks?

The Green Prime Ranger makes her debut, and it's pretty satisfying, especially the defeat of the VR Troopers. But who is the mysterious man on the last page?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.
