Sonic the Hedgehog: Fang the Hunter #1 begins with Fang, Bean, and Bark attempting to ambush Sonic, resulting in a dramatic failure. Despite this, Fang manages to inquire about a Chaos Emerald, to which Sonic is oblivious. The trio abandons the ambush but contemplates giving up until Fang motivates them to persist. Even in failure, it’s still an adventure! They target Knuckles but are unsuccessful in finding him, discovering only tracks. Unbeknownst to them, Knuckles is hunting them, outsmarting Bark, and trapping Bean. Now, Fang is determined to prove he’s the ultimate hunter!
I have a casual interest in Sonic lore, enjoying the concepts and reminiscing about playing the games. Sonic the Hedgehog: Fang the Hunter #1 should work well on paper. The narrative structure and inciting incident are intriguing, the lore is established, and the characters are generally likable. However, it lacks the magic to truly captivate me. More depth or a more explicit plot would have made the book more engaging. While technically correct, the simplicity of the writing feels somewhat superficial. Perhaps I’m being critical because it’s a kid’s comic, but I needed something more to stand out in a world of abundant media.
The writing is decent, and the art is solid, but it lacks memorability. There’s a premise, but more development time for these ideas could have elevated it. Consequently, it earns a rating of 2.5 out of 5 stars.
