Previously in My Little Pony: After Zipp missed a rehearsal of Pipp before the Royal Dinner, the sisters got into an argument that summoned Milkyway. Milkyway decided to switch their cutie mark, which forced them to trade jobs! However, after Milkyway realizes that her plan won’t unite the sisters, she summons a storm, forcing the event to be canceled.
My Little Pony #20 starts with the pony crew trying to figure out what they can do, and they realize that every pony has a phone. So they decide to host a virtual Royal Dinner. To smooth things over with her fans, Zipp talks to Carotang and invites him to sing after she threatened him in previous issues. Meanwhile, Pipp struggles to write a speech that shows what the Royal Dinner means. Misty decides to try to apologize to Milkyway but instead brings her to the event. Luckily, Pipp makes an endearing speech, and Zipp’s choice to let Carotang perform instead of her repairs her image to the audience. And Zipp and Pipp decide to duet together to close out the dinner. With that, all are saved, and they truly understand each other.
What I love about My Little Pony is how accessible it has been for my daughter and learning basic lessons. Things that I think she subconsciously influences her interactions in kindergarten and with her brother. When we sat down to read My Little Pony #20, she understood the overall dynamic between the sisters but struggled with the villain’s motivation. The treatment of Milkyway’s motivation didn’t make sense to her, and I’ll be honest, I’m not even sure if my explanation was accurate to the creative team’s intent. As an adult watching and reading children’s media with my kids, my interest usually lies in the lessons learned and precisely how the villain learns their lesson. But I don’t think I quite got that here. Despite that, I think the narrative arc is solid, and the art was the best it has been in a while. Great work by the creative team.
My Little Pony #20 provides a solid conclusion that has reinvigorated my child’s interest in the series. Lately, she has been shying away from My Little Pony for other stories, but every time we sit down to read this comic, she watches a couple of television series episodes. So, in that light, the comics are doing a good job here. I give 4 out of 5 stars to My Little Pony #20.
