Previously in Daredevil: Matt Murdock lost his sight but gained a radar sense. With these abilities, he became the hero Daredevil. Recently, Matt sacrificed his life in hell to save the souls of his friends but was reborn. He now acts as a Catholic Priest overseeing the Saint Nicholas Youth Home. However, a demon targeted Elektra, and Matt had to exorcise the demon. Now, he balances who he was versus who he is now.
Daredevil #2 starts with police knocking on the Saint Nicholas Youth Center, accusing Father Matt of taking foster children and turning them into criminals. This is based on an online article that they felt compelled to investigate. Matt puts on the Daredevil costume to blow off steam and stops a turf war between the Dragons and a new group called “The Heat.” This new group has military-grade weapons, which is unusual for a new gang. Returning home, he learns that one of his kids is getting relentlessly picked on. Despite his place as a priest, he uses his lawyer skills to try and figure out who is targeting him and the Youth Center, and he tracks it to Ben Ulrich.
I don’t know how I feel about the themes in this book. Daredevil #2 shows Matt’s previous life returning to haunt him as a superhero and lawyer. From a story perspective, I get that we are trying to get him back into the costume, but part of me just wants him to retire from his superhero life. I want to see Matt pass off the mantle of Daredevil to Elektra, with him there as a moral compass. Instead, we are getting these plotlines where he is being dragged back. Don’t get me wrong; the narrative arc needs Daredevil to be Daredevil. Those are the promises the book sets up for us, but I struggle to figure out why my headcanon wants him to retire.
Daredevil comics have always used great color, and this comic is no exception. It is a beautiful book, and that opening page of Matt Murdock and Daredevil back-to-back made me do a double take. Great work here.
I am reading Daredevil #2, knowing that I will be disappointed. The plot I have in my head is not the same one that will happen. Yet I find myself transfixed into understanding what is going to happen next. I have a small hope that my desires for the character will come true. With that in mind, Daredevil #2 is a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars.
