Previously in Klik Klik Boom: Serena and Sprout find each other. Serena thinks she is uncovering a big story. She did not realize it came with complications, like being chased by men with guns. Serena starts to panic while Sprout calmly goes through her photos. A group of armed men enter the seedy hotel Sprout rented. Sprout has filled the place with booby traps and uses Serena as bait. Sprout indicates she is after Harvard Dillinger. Then she takes Serena to her next hideout and gives her more of the story. Dillinger killed her grandfather. Serena knows a judge who may help them. They go to her house – and discover she has been killed.

    DON’T MESS WITH FAMILY

Klik Klik Boom #3 opens at Diane Allister’s estate. Serena has only a few moments to grieve for her friend before she and Sprout hear a crash. They have been followed. Sprout hands Serena a photo that tells her to count to 20 and go to a specific place. She does not answer Serena when she asks about when the other woman took that photo. She moves a moment early and is nearly caught in an explosion. She goes to the next place, which, of course, has another photo. “Don’t scream,” it says. A body drops down the stairs from above her.

The next photo is in a dark room in the middle of an X painted on the floor. It has no other directions for her. Two gunmen enter the room and threaten to execute her. Before they shoot, Serena asks them how they knew Sprout would come here. They didn’t, they tell her. But they knew Serena would. They switch from a gun to a knife to make her death quieter. Enter Sprout, who kills them with the judge’s gavel.

Sprout looks out the window. There is a car down below, a car with Dillinger in it. She remembers when her grandfather put her into the panic room and ordered her not to come out no matter what. She hears the shots. She hears Dillinger give Harrington the all-clear. Her grandfather reminds Harrington that they had a deal. Harrington leans over him and tells him that the deal was with his father, not with him.

And Sprout took pictures. She leaves some at the judge’s house, and Dillinger’s men find them and give them to him. He thanks them and then shoots them. And he decides that framing the women for the judge’s death will not be enough. He needs a bigger team so he can eliminate them entirely. Sprout also left him a picture of the warehouse that is her current hideout.

Sprout and Serena return to the warehouse and Sprout changes her look and resupplies. Serena realizes that she is bait once again. There is an explosion. Serena knows she is in the middle of the biggest story she has ever cracked and is certain that she will not live to write it all down. Sprout leads her to an X on the floor and gives her Beatrix the bunny to hold. Harrington’s strike force enters the building and starts hitting booby traps. Harrington decides he needs more drastic measures.

Serena panics and leaves her mark.

    DESCENT INTO TERROR

Ever since she connected with Sprout, Serena has not had a moment to think, and the art of Klik Klik Boom #3 captures that superbly. She starts out overwhelmed by the death of her good friend. She barely has time to comprehend this before she is back to following crazy, cryptic messages. We have to give Sprout credit – her instructions are precise, and they have kept Serena alive so far. But each one builds on the unexpected terrors that come hand in hand with Sprout’s traps. For someone who is not used to violence, the stress keeps building and building to the point where she simply cannot deal with it any longer.

Previously, we have seen Sprout smiling and having a good time with the preliminary stages of her hunt. Now that things have gotten more serious, so has her demeanor. She is all business, not to mention precision. We understand that her upbringing has brought her to this point. She was raised to be a professional. Her grandfather’s murder is all the more horrific now that we know she was a witness to it and not just to the aftermath. She feels his loss keenly and is driven to using everything she knows to bring him justice.

BOTTOM LINE: THE SUSPENSE IS PALPABLE

Klik Klik Boom #3 ramps up the action and raises the stakes for Sprout and Serena. So far, Sprout has managed to outmaneuver her pursuers, but how long will she be able to keep this up?

By day, she’s a mild-mannered bureaucrat and Ms. Know-It-All. By night, she’s a dance teacher and RPG player (although admittedly not on the same nights). On the weekends, she may be found judging Magic, playing Guild Wars 2 (badly), or following other creative pursuits. Holy Lack of Copious Free Time, Batman! While she’s always wished she had teleportation as her superpower, she suspects that super-speed would be much more practical because then she’d have time to finish up those steampunk costumes she’s also working on.
