Previously in Starsigns: Rana meets Tatiana/Leo when she breaks down the door to Rana’s apartment. Tatiana calls her “Taurus” and urges Rana to come with her. Rana stops time, grabs her purse and shoes, and leaves. Tatiana comes after her until she is warned off by an F.B.I. agent. Except the agent…isn’t. He introduces himself to Rana as Clarence – and Gemini. He has the ability to shapeshift, and he knows Rana has powers. They find a diner where they briefly share notes, including the suspicion that there are still others out there like them. One of those is Alejandro, a young boy who recently immigrated from Guatemala. When he and his mother are picked up by immigration officials, Alejandro uses his powers to talk them into setting him and his mother free.
THE SEARCH IS ON!
Star Signs #3 opens with a flashback to one of Tatiana’s early birthdays. She was a very young child when bombs struck near her party, killing the rest of her family. That memory still haunts her, even as she follows Mister Duke on their next mission.
Rana has memories of her own childhood and the aftermath of a party. She recalls walking through the park with her parents and getting comments from others about not speaking English. Her mother stands up to them, but moments later she collapses. Back in the present Clarence reminds Rana that she is driving and needs to pay attention. They find the immigration facility, a featureless and windowless building. But Clarence has heard that Alejandro slipped away. A glow of powers strikes them both, and they realize they can find him.
Alejandro and his mother are still in the woods. She is worried that the men hunting them will find them, but the little boy knows they are elsewhere. He also knows they are moving toward the people they need to meet. Mister Duke is the first one to find them, and he calls the little boy, “Cancer.” Alejandro’s mother steps in front of the boy to protect him, and he warns her that Duke is a bad man. They run.
Tatiana, meanwhile, catches up with Rana and Clarence. There is a brief fight, but with two against one, they can knock Leo out at least for a short while. It is Alejandro who finds them, and he tells his mother that these two are okay. But Mister Duke is not far behind them. He bursts onto the scene and introduces himself as Aries. He unleashes his powers, which set the woods on fire!
VIBRANTLY COMPELLING
I like the opening sequence in Star Signs #3 where we see the juxtaposition of Tatiana’s past and Rana’s past. They are not exact parallels, but they have some elements in common. Both young women have lived through tragedy and loss, but their experiences have shaped them differently. Now they share the remarkable gift of powers. Tatiana is heavily influenced by Mister Duke, while Rana has made an independent life for herself, and it is her inner compass that guides her path.
The sequence that takes place in the woods is drawn well, but there is a sort of sameness about it that dampens any sense of scale. The fight with Tatiana is brief and exciting, and Clarence’s contribution is creative and fun. However, Mister Duke seems to show up so quickly and easily that we lose some sense of suspense. I do appreciate that through Alejandro, we have some confirmation that Aries is up to no good, and he certainly manifests that more clearly here than in previous issues. We just do not yet have a good sense of what his motivation is.
BOTTOM LINE: SEARCHING FOR THEIR PURPOSE
Star Signs #3 does a great job of bringing together characters from a variety of cultures which is always refreshing. I am enjoying the story so far, but I wish we understood a little more about Mister Duke and why there is already a conflict among the constellations even before they understand who they are.
