STEP OFF THE PLANE, GET IN EVERYONE’S FACE
Daredevil #4 opens with Matt, Cole, and Foggy all on a plane. Matt does his best to keep Cole calm. Once they arrive, they’re greeted by Matt’s old mentor Stick as well as Elektra and the recruits she’s gathered. Things are tense at first until Dr. Sasquatch arrives and calms everyone down. Later that night Matt is informed that the next day, he and Elektra will have to endure some sort of ceremony to become the king and queen of The Fist. At the same time Cole is confronted by one of the recruits who thinks Cole is doomed to die because he’s not strong enough. The next morning Elektra and Matt set out to have their ceremony, while Cole gets ready to show the other recruits he belongs there.
LOSING ITS GRIT
While it’s a mistake to say that Daredevil only works as a street-level, gritty noir character, there are just some stories that seem to have to work a lot harder to make Matt Murdock fit and this feels like one of those stories. Throughout this issue, both Matt, Elektra, Foggy, and to a lesser extent Stick all seem somewhat playful and near optimistic about things, which is somewhat of a departure from recent years. All in all, this is a well-constructed comic book. It doesn’t dawdle on any particular scene and feels like it knows what the important parts of this issue are and wants to get to them efficiently. Also, the dual fight scenes in the back half of this issue come off as a nice crescendo to not only this issue but the series so far, at least since the end of Devil’s Reign. Also, there are the final pages that shake things up quite a bit for the Daredevil world.
MATT GET’S SOME NINJA COSTUME LOVE
One of the better things that came out of the last Daredevil series was a drastic change to Elektra’s costume, one that incorporated her ninja training into her position as Daredevil. Well, in this issue, Matt gets the same treatment. While it is a bit derivative of Elektra’s costume, it’s still a good look and it’ll be nice to see Matt rocking it for a while. Other than that, the art in this issue is on point and well done. The action sequences are crafted in such a way that details aren’t lost and all the strikes have force behind them, which is always important for a martial arts-based comic.
BOTTOM LINE: SOME CHARACTER AWKWARDNESS DOESN’T RUIN A GOOD COMIC
It’s always a bit strange when Matt Murdock gets taken out of Hell’s Kitchen, but after a few awkward moments, this issue finds its footing and ends on a strong note. Plus, Matt’s new suit is great, so go check that out. 4 out of 5 stars.
