Previously in Trve Kvlt: Check out the brand-new comedy series about a man committing the perfect heist. Marty has worked at Burger Lord for fifteen years. He has no kids, no hobbies, no love interests, and no life. But he has a plan to change everything!
CHANGING YOUR FATE
Trve Kvlt #1 starts with Marty Tarantella on his lunch break, preparing to rob an entire strip mall. He has deduced the perfect time is in the middle of rush hour when there is a lot of traffic due to the dinner rush. This makes it difficult for cops to show up, and it is when the stores are about to close. He hits eight stores and makes some money, but he decides to impulsively rob a delivery driver before clocking back into work.
At Burger Lord, he finds out that their cashier has called out of work. Luckily, Marty is interviewing a new applicant, Alison, who has worked at a Burger Lord before and may be willing to start immediately. Alison is the perfect applicant and seems passionate, but the interview is interrupted when cops show up to inquire about the robberies. Alison comes up with a white lie to throw to mess with the cops. As the cops leave, Alison and Marty are approached by a group of people trying to spread the word of Satan.
SOLID START
I opened Trve Kvlt, not expecting much. It seemed like a fun premise and a solid read. The way the story is presented provides a great hook to become sympathetic to the main character. Through nonlinear storytelling and flashbacks, we learn how Marty got the job and his overall outlook. He is a man looking for a change, and sometimes you must actively make that change. But this deep personal storyline is intermingled with funny self-monologue and a colorful cast of characters. We get a brief montage of the stores in the strip mall, and every store acts differently after being robbed. This levity adds significant complexity to a rather serious story.
However, I wasn’t vibing with the art style of Trve Kvlt #1. The heavy use of orange and purple overwhelms the page at times, and I can’t help but imagine the Bob’s Burger TV show with some of the stylings. I understand the artistic choice, but it wasn’t for me.
BOTTOM LINE: I WANT TO READ MORE
This comic has gotten my attention, and I want to know more about Marty and Alison. The reality of the working-class person intermingled with a satanic cult and a bit of comedy is a great premise. Trve Kvlt #1 is a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars from me.
