Previously in Spider-Gwen: Gwen Stacy has a synthetic symbiotic suit that turns her into the hero Ghost-Spider! When jumping to a parallel universe, she was caught by the pop idol, Finale, from the end of time! Now she has recruited alternate versions of herself with Iron Gwen, Thorgwen, Captain America, and Wolverine. However, their teamwork is rocky at best!

    SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED

Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse #4 starts with Ghost Spider leading her team against Nightbird and Doctor Cephalopod. However, her team is rough around the edges. During the fight with Nightbird, Gwen knocks off Nightbird’s mask to reveal another version of Gwen Stacy. Nightbird admits that she inhaled Goblin Gas, which makes her “see clearly.” Nightbird and the Doctor escape, so the team goes another time and find Gwen Stacy, Captain Marvel!

Captain Marvel is under Kree control, and Nightbird shows up to show her the truth. This causes the Kree empire to overload Captain Marvel with power, which causes Captain Marvel to explode. Ghost-Spider shows up for a rematch with Nightbird, but her symbiote suit heals Nightbird of the goblin gas. The heroes now join forces and decide to take the fight to Finale directly before it is too late.

THE DEATH THAT BRINGS US TOGETHER

Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse #4 closes out Act 2 of the narrative arc and propels us to Act 3. And with many classic superheroes and superhero teams, it is with death. The creative team did an excellent job setting up Captain Marvel as a character before ultimately “killing” her off. Well, as good as they are able with only a few pages to work with. This is my main critique of this series; the pacing is fast. The creative team is trying to introduce many characters in a short time. I am unsure if I am supposed to assume they are identical to their 616 counterparts personality-wise. I want a little more time to explore this storyline, but when you only have five issues, you work with what you have.

The creative team has nailed Nightbird and Captain Marvel’s character design. Making them similar to their counterparts while also distinctively Gwen Stacy. It is almost a shame that this is only a miniseries because I would like to see these characters do more things. Great work by the creative team here.

    BOTTOM LINE: GOOD READ

I am excited about the conclusion of this miniseries. This has been a fun, pleasant read and something I plan to hand to my daughter when the trade paperback comes out. Great work here, and lots of unique ideas that are complex but presented in a way that is easy to understand. 4 out of 5 stars for Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse #4.
