In-Person Oscars – Did You Hear? Week of December 4th, 2020

Ashley Victoria RobinsonBy Ashley Victoria RobinsonDecember 4, 20202 Mins Read

Did You Hear? is a weekly examination of headlines in the entertainment industry and a take on what they could mean for the future of the industry and (often), the little geeky bubble that we occupy!

Academy Claims the Oscar Will Take Place “In-Person”

    eeaf9e7342a0d077a20f395dfcb8791e3d240e5afc2b69f74870afcac3979626

Variety broke the new on Tuesday their 2021 telecast will take place in-person as opposed to digitally as the Emmys and pretty much every other award show has done since March of this year.

We do discuss this on the most recent Major Spoilers Podcast where the consensus was: “We’ll see.”

While it is very possible a stripped-back Oscars could be pulled off safely (major productions like Shang-Chi shot with not a single case among the cast and crew), Variety points out:

It’s not clear what safety protocols will be introduced for the ceremony. A representative from the Dolby Theatre declined to comment.

There is a long time between now and then. This will definitely be a story to follow here on  Did You Hear?

Elliot Page Comes Out as Trans

Today Elliot Page announced to the world that he is transgender and will now be living his truth. This is some of the best news the world of entertainment has had in 2020 and we celebrate him for it!

In addition to the announcement Variety followed up with some new about Page’s continued involvement in Netflix’s Umbrella Academy. He will continue to play the role of Vanya (season 3 of Umbrella Academy was recently confirmed):

Director of Transgender Media at GLAAD, Nick Adams offered this comment to Variety:

Trans actors can and do play both trans and cisgender characters. I’m sure Elliot will continue to be brilliant in Umbrella Academy and many different types of roles in the future.”

As a massive fan of Umbrella Academy I can’t wait to see what Elliot is going to bring to the most powerful character on the show!
