Some would call it the greatest rivalry in pop culture: Star Wars, that quasi-fantasy ‘Knights In Space’ versus evil ebony samurai tale; or Star Trek, cowboy diplomacy with pew-pew phaser guns and great sideburns. Rodrigo says it’s a question of knights versus cowboys, Stephen a question of science fiction versus fantasy, but I have a different theory: It’s all about cool laser swords versus cool rayguns. Even though a lightsaber seems like a no-brainer in the phaser or saber discussion, I’ve always loved the design of the Type II phaser, even when I was a young lad, and have one carefully hidden (read: “misplaced”) in my office right now, leading us to today’s photonic query…
The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) likes both franchises most equally, but finds that the one-two punch of Avery Brooks and “Pew-pew-pew!” give phasers a slight edge, asking: Which would you rather carry: Phaser or Saber?

would “carrying” include being trained in proper handling as well? i suppose a phaser is more intuitive right out of the box, so to speak.
i definitely wouldn’t want to carry a lightsaber around and find out i didn’t receive enough training or my midichlorian count wasn’t high enough to wield it.
I’m pretty sure I’d cut off my own extremities if I tried to use a lightsaber, so I think I’d stick with the phaser. Plus, it’s kind of hard to stun with a lightsaber.
If I could properly handle it, lightsaber. If I had to choose right now for myself, then phaser, because with that that thing I could actually hit something.
