They’re a classic comic duo: Brains and brawn! Speed and durability! Antlers and goggles! And even decades after their debut, Rocket J. Squirrel and Bullwinkle Moose, Esquire are still a part of the pop culture landscape. Though I didn’t care for their weird CG 90s adventure, the subversive humor of their adventures has fared better than many of their late-fifties animated counterparts. Arguing which contemporaries they’re better than would be an interesting question, but a more difficult one would force us to choose Rocky or Bullwinkle invidually, leading to today’s Sophie’s Choice of a query…
The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) probably has to lean towards the moose, if only because my peer group in college would put our hands up as antlers and do the Bullwinkle voice to yell “DEER PRESSURE! DEER PRESSURE!” at one another, for reasons unknown, asking: Rocky or Bullwinkle?

Noooooooooo! Don’t make me choose! They are totally a team.
That said, Rocky. They’re both sweet and trusting, but Rocky is a shade smarter. Plus he flies. Or at least glides. And wears a cool helmet.
I don’t know that either one works without the other. I guess Bullwinkle, since all he really needs is a straight man to play off of.
The first place I lived with my wife after getting married was on a Bullwinkle Drive, and then we moved to Canada for a time, so it has to be Bullwinkle J. Moose.
