IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
BATMAN #50
Writer: Tom King
Artist: Various
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
Release Date: July 4, 2018
SOLICITATION: It’s the wedding you never thought you’d see! The Batrimony is real as Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle are set to tie the knot in a can’t-miss, extra-length milestone issue that will reshape Gotham City. All their friends (and a few enemies?) will be party to a comic book coupling for the ages.
STEPHEN: Sure, the New York TImes totally spoiled the wedding event earlier this week, but as I mentioned on this week’s Major Spoilers Podcast, there is much more to the issue than Batrimony. The who and the why are so much more important, and if Tom King is telling the truth that this arc continues to issue #100, then my goodness, you need to get this issue today.
CATWOMAN #1
Writer: Joelle Jones
Artist: Joelle Jones
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The wedding night’s barely over, but Catwoman’s back on the streets, this time to expose a copycat who’s pulling heists around Gotham City. As Selina cracks the whip on her former criminal cohorts, she’s attracting unwanted attention from one of Gotham’s most dangerous groups. The mob? Nope. Try the GCPD. And as if the Bat-Bride didn’t have enough problems, don’t miss the debut of an all-new villain determined to make trouble for all nine of Selina’s lives. Don’t miss the start of an all-new monthly series written and illustrated by Eisner Award-nominee Joëlle Jones!
STEPHEN: If you are going to read Batman #50, then you need to find out what happens next in Catwoman #1! Joelle Jones is a fantastic storyteller and artist, and I’m picking this issue up for both of those reasons (also, because it ties into Batman #50).
ELVIRA: MISTRESS OF THE DARK #1
Writer: David Avallone
Artist: Dave Acosta
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: July 4th, 2018
SOLICITATION: The Mistress of the Dark has become unstuck in time! Elvira crashes Mary Shelley’s monster weekend, beginning an epic journey through horror history, stalked by the most terrifying nightmare to ever walk the Earth. (No spoilers!) Writer David Avallone (Bettie Page, Doc Savage, Twilight Zone) and Dave Acosta (Doc Savage) bring you the thrills, chills and double-entendres in the first chapter of this four-issue miniseries!
Played by actress-writer Cassandra Peterson, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark has carved out a niche in popular American culture that is sure to endure for decades to come. Elvira’s reign as ‘Queen of Halloween’ has now spanned thirty-five years and includes two nationally syndicated television series, two feature films (Elvira, Mistress of the Dark and Elvira’s Haunted Hills), an IMAX movie and two motion control rides. She has appeared in National ad campaigns for Pepsi and Coors, recorded five music CDs, written four books and licensed over Four Hundred products including pinball machines, action figures, guitars, three comic book series, a beer, wine, soda pop, perfume, slot machines and the best-selling female costume of all time.
STACY: This touches a heart string for me, as I have a love of late night horror host that is well documented. The sarcasm is thick here, and it is fits Elvira to a T. Great comic with a great creative team!
JUSTICE LEAGUE #3
Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: Jorge Jimenez
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: John Stewart: Ultraviolet Lantern? Believe it! Under the influence of the Ultraviolet Spectrum, John Stewart engages in some ultraviolence against his teammates Flash, Wonder Woman and Aquaman. Meanwhile, the rest of the League investigates the scene of the fallen Source Wall fragment, and encounters not only a horde of giant monsters, but a pair of longtime archenemies using stolen Atom technology to literally get under their skin. Best to stock up on Cortizone for that sort of itch! All this and…the Turtle? Yep.
INGRID: We’re at the midpoint of the arc, and things are starting to come together! This is an epic tale, and the art is terrific.
STEPHEN: I’ve always liked a good John Stewart story, and this issue seems to be a major change for the character. You bet I’m picking this one up!
LADY MECHANIKA LA BELLE DAME SANS MERCI #1
Writer: Joe Benitz, M.M. Chen
Artist: Martin Montiel
Publisher: Benitez Productions
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Lady Mechanika finally has a solid clue to her forgotten past, but the investigation becomes overshadowed by her concern for Mr. Lewis when his behavior suddenly turns erratic and potentially dangerous upon meeting a beautiful and enigmatic young widow. A brand new three-issue mini-series!
INGRID: As a steampunk fan, I’ve been following this creator-owned book for some time. It’s Victorian-era science fiction and mystery with a fascinating main character who is trying to learn about her own history. This book starts a new 3-issue arc, and I can’t wait.
PROJECT SUPERPOWERS #0
Writer: Rob Williams
Artist: Sergio Davila
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment

SOLICITATION: Superpowers #0: Project Superpowers is Back! Written by Rob (Suicide Squad) Williams, illustrated by Sergio (Injustice, Superman) Davila, and featuring an all-star roster of cover artists, this introductory-priced issue is the perfect starting point for the most ambitious superhero story of 2018.
An all-new threat faces the Earth, while the team faces turmoil from within and must overcome all obstacles to prove their worth and value in a world that desperately needs its heroes. Featuring an introductory story leading right into the all-new #1 next month, Project Superpowers #0 is action-packed and introductory priced. Includes bonus materials and 16 pages of original story.
STACY: These vintage and public domain heroes are a huge part of Dynamite’s history. Original and creative takes on characters that had once been all but abandoned, it’s a favorite of mine. Great art and a peek at a stunning new story.
SWORD DAUGHTER #2
Writer: Brian Wood
Artist: Mack Chater
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: Revenge is violent and heartbreaking, but for Dag and his semi-feral daughter, the clash of swords is a chance to heal old wounds. First stop is the Shetlands and a serial killer who must be put down.
INGRID: This is a beautiful and bleak book about revenge, and about a father and young daughter learning to trust one another.
