IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
BATGIRL #43
Writers: Cameron Stewart, Brendan Fletcher
Artist: Babs Tarr
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Tech genius Luke Fox has brought his startup to Burnside, and he seems to be hiring all of Barbara’s friends…but not her! Unfortunately, someone else is setting up shop in Burnside as well…the mysterious Velvet Tiger!
WAYNE: I continue to enjoy this new version of Batgirl. If you aren’t getting this title, I highly recommend you pick it up!
CYBORG #2
Writer: David F. Walker
Artist: Joe Prado, Ivan Reis
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: The most advanced tech known to humans has been used to turn Vic Stone in to Cyborg, making him one of the most powerful beings on the planet. Now he’s been targeted by alien invaders that want his technology—even if they have to kill Cyborg and everyone he knows to get it!
ROB: First issue was good, story looks interesting. Vic with an ongoing is still all I need to pick this book up.
DOCTOR WHO 2015 FOUR DOCTORS #3
Writer: Paul Cornell
Artist: Neil Edwards
Publisher: Titan Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: INTO THE LION’S DEN! THE DOCTORS TAKE THE FIGHT TO THE ENEMY…
BUT HAVE THEY ALREADY BEEN OUTMANEUVERED?
MATTHEW: WELL, HAVE THEY????
Overly shouty solicitation copy aside, this has been an enjoyable crossover story, and as anyone will tell you, I’m always into a multi-Doctor storyline. Add in two cool comics companions to offset the overbearing Clara, and you’ve got a recipe for fun…
STEPHEN: It’s called Four Doctors, yet it’s my understanding that we’ve seen the last of the War Doctor in issue #1. Still there is a fourth Doctor that appears in this issue, and he isn’t who you think it is.
E-MAN EARLY YEARS TRADE PAPERBACK
Writer: Joe Staton/Nicola Cuti
Artist: Joe Staton/Nicola Cuti
Publisher: Devil’s Due Publishing
Cover Price: $27.95
SOLICITATION: The beautifully re-colored collection of Nic Cuti and Joe Staton’s entire 10-issue E-Man run at Charlton Comics. Bonus materials include pieces done for Charlton Bullseye and original First Comics’ Michael Mauser/E-Man reprint covers. A gorgeous and fun collection; all reprint collections should be done so well! Softcover, 212 pages, full color.
MATTHEW: Another example of comics way ahead of their time, Charlton’s original E-Man comics combined 40s goofiness with a modern storytelling sensibility, presaging the likes of Deadpool, Squirrel Girl and Harley Quinn. Add in the super-inventive art of Joe Staton in his prime, and you’ve got a package well worth the price tag…
HELLBOY IN HELL #7
Writer: Mike Mignola
Artist: Mike Mignola
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “The Hounds of Pluto” Part 1 of 2.
A sickness eats away at Hellboy. Though he’s dead, he risks losing himself and becoming one of the hollow phantoms that haunt Hell. A team of doctors promise a cure, but they need something from him first . . .
STEPHEN: This is a totally trippy issue that features Hellboy (in Hell) still coming to grips with what is going on. For everyone who says they want to see Hellboy 3, you should really pick up this book as it is written and illustrated by creator Mike Mignola. You don’t get any more Hellboy than that!
PASTAWAYS #6
Writer: Matt Kindt
Artist: Scott Kolins
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “Across space and time, the immortal Past Aways have battled their share of monsters – but a new beast has reared its ugly head, and the team may not be able to survive the onslaught of the terrible creature known as . . . celebrity!”
WAYNE: Such a terrific comic! Great characters, great concept, great storytelling! Don’t miss this powerful title delivered from two of the best comics creators in the business!
PREZ #3
Writer: Mark Russell
Artist: Ben Caldwell
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: President-elect Beth Ross assembles a cabinet including her former boss, a disgraced congressman, and an anti-Smurf intellectual. Plus, Congress scrambles to pass pork-barrel legislation. Literally.
And Boss Smiley imprisons his critics in a gerbil cage.
MATTHEW: As a fan of off-beat and unusual comics, I’ve really enjoyed the first two issues of Prez. I want all of you to check it out, and maybe together we can get the book past twelve issues before it gets replaced with another Bat-spinoff…
SPIDER-WOMAN #10
Writer: Dennis Hopeless
Artist: Natacha Bustos
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Last Days of Spider-Woman! Spider-Woman’s roadtrip across the country continues, as she pays a visit to the Alamo! Not even Spider-Woman and her RAGTAG CREW OF BEN URICH AND THE PORCUPINE are safe from SECRET WARS, though.
ROB: A fun ride so far, with Secret Wars tearing things apart I’m glad I’ve been in on the entire journey. Still worth snagging the final issue even if you haven’t seen anything before though.
STRINGERS #1
Writer: Marc Guggenheim
Artist: Justin Greenwood
Publisher: Oni Press
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Paul and Nick are the guys who shoot the news. Filming car chases, fires, and shootouts in their busted-up rig, they put their (uninsured, unsalaried) lives on the line every night so that the good citizens of Los Angeles can get their daily update. But when a firefight between the LAPD and the MS-13 goes wrong, Nick and Paul find themselves on the run.
STEPHEN: I reviewed this issue a few weeks ago, and it has a great concept that begs to be explored. The first issue kicks it off, and has a hook that has me waiting for the next issue to arrive.
WAYNE: You might recognize Mr. Guggenheim from a certain Arrow television program on The CW. He’s a comics pro as well, having created Resurrection and Nowhere Man. He can certainly tell a good story, so don’t miss this first issue!
TMNT CASEY & APRIL #3
Writer: Mariko Tamaki
Artist: Irene Koh
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Casey and April are separated and both must face the Rat King’s maze alone. Clues to the Pantheon await just out of reach, but Casey and April may not be able to find them if they cannot find each other.
ROB: More Rat King is all I need to pick this up. Of course, when it’s just Casey and April facing something akin to a god, why wouldn’t I want to pick it up?
